Using an implementation science approach to implement and evaluate patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) initiatives in routine care settings

Angela M. Stover et al.

Summary: Across case studies, consistent barriers to PROM/PREM implementation were identified, including technology issues, uncertainty about how or why to use PROMs/PREMs, and competing demands from established clinical workflows. However, enabling factors were context specific in each clinic, highlighting the need for tailored implementation strategies based on clinic resources. Further theoretically guided studies are needed to explore how IS principles can lead to successful integration and sustainability of PROM/PREMs.

Construct validity of the Smoker Complaint Scale: A clinimetric analysis using Item Response Theory (IRT) models

Summary: This study used clinimetric principles to assess the construct validity of the Smoker Complaint Scale (SCS) for nicotine withdrawal symptoms, finding it to be a multidimensional measure with a particularly valid four-item subscale (SCS4) for evaluating symptom severity. Affective symptoms of withdrawal were found to precede cognitive symptoms, indicating the SCS4's sensitivity in differentiating severity levels of withdrawal symptoms.
