Virtual reality has the potential to create immersive and interactive worlds, but human factors/ergonomics issues with VR headsets can negatively impact user health and limit technological applications. This paper provides an overview of HFE studies for VR headsets, discussing factors such as human performance, pressure, fatigue, and motion sickness, as well as evaluation methods for better product development. The future direction of virtual reality technology is also explored, highlighting the importance of human-centric research in advancing the industry.
Virtual reality can create a world that can be immersive, interactive, and imaginative, becoming a new entrance for the next-generation computing platform. However, the human factors/ergonomics problems of virtual reality headsets are not only bad for the physical and mental health of users, but also restrict the application of virtual reality technology in different fields. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the human factors/ergonomics (HFE) studies for virtual reality headsets. This review paper describes and discusses the various factors and methodologies of HFE, for the purpose of better considering human factors, used in studies of virtual reality headsets and further human-centered product development. By reviewing the domestic and foreign research status of human factors/ergonomics evaluation for virtual reality headsets, this paper highlighted the importance of the research on human factors of virtual reality headsets. Based on this, the human factors such as human performance, pressure, fatigue and visual induced motion sickness were discussed. This paper also explored the methods and indices of human factors/ergonomics from subjective evaluation and objective evaluation. Finally, the future development trend of virtual reality was prospected, which was of great significance to the promotion of virtual reality industry. This is a first paper in the field of HFE studies for virtual reality headsets, which will remain helpful to the scientific community to start further human-centered research work and product development.
