Fluorescent and electrochemical bimodal bioplatform for femtomolar detection of microRNAs in blood sera

Summary: The study introduces a novel method for sensitive detection of miRNAs levels using a dual signal readout system involving competitive hybridization of miR-21 target and its biotinylated analog. The bioplatform demonstrates low detection limits, wide linear calibration range, excellent selectivity towards non-complementary miRs, and acceptable distinction with single nucleotide mismatched sequences. Furthermore, the method was successfully used to determine miR-21 expression levels in blood sera from breast cancer patients.

The sensor does not require intercalating labels, reporter probes, added enzymes or hairpin primers for target amplification, offering a simple and robust strategy for miRNA detection.
