Effect of polystyrene on di-butyl phthalate (DBP) bioavailability and DBP-induced phytotoxicity in lettuce

Minling Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of small and large polystyrene microplastics on lettuce under di-butyl phthalate stress. The results showed that microplastics, especially in combination with DBP, could decrease lettuce biomass, induce oxidative stress, and exacerbate subcellular damage. Additionally, PS adhered to root surfaces and caused physical blockage of root pores, leading to cell membrane and wall damage. Molecular docking revealed interactions between DBP and monobutyl phthalate with superoxide dismutase residues. Moreover, there was no statistical difference in phytotoxicity between nano- and microplastics on lettuce, with PS aggravating DBP-induced phytotoxicity.

Effects of plastic particles on germination and growth of soybean (Glycine max): A pot experiment under field condition

Bintao Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that plastic residues had significant negative effects on soybean seed germination, plant growth, and biomass production, particularly in inhibiting seed germination and reducing plant height. Low density polyethylene debris had a greater negative impact on plant growth, while biodegradable plastic debris mainly affected germination rate and root biomass.

Polystyrene microplastics disturb the redox homeostasis, carbohydrate metabolism and phytohormone regulatory network in barley

Shuxin Li et al.

Summary: This study found that microplastics negatively affect the growth of barley plants by limiting root development and altering enzyme activities in roots. There were differences in carbohydrate and ROS metabolism enzyme activities between leaves and roots under microplastics treatment, as well as distinct changes in phytohormone concentrations. The findings suggest that the phytohormone regulatory network plays a key role in regulating enzyme activities in response to microplastics in barley plants.

Microplastics and nanoplastics in the environment: Macroscopic transport and effects on creatures

Danlian Huang et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a major environmental issue globally, with current research mainly focusing on microplastics/nanoplastics in individual environments, neglecting the interconnected nature of the natural environment. The transport of microplastics/nanoplastics among different environments and their impact on organisms are crucial research areas that require urgent attention.

Uptake of microplastics by carrots in presence of As (III): Combined toxic effects

Youming Dong et al.

Summary: Current research shows that microplastics can enter carrot roots and leaves, with arsenic (As) increasing the amount of microplastics entering the carrot tissue and cells, leading to reduced quality of carrots. The presence of As exacerbates the effects of microplastics on carrots, posing greater health risks for consumers.
