Retrofitting aims to improve the seismic resistance of existing building structures. Experimental studies show that wrapping reinforced concrete beams with different types of fiber reinforced polymers can enhance their load capacity and reduce deflection.
Retrofitting is the upgrading of the existing building structures to make them more resistant to seismic activity. Many of the existing buildings including reinforced concrete structures, masonry structures, bridges throughout the world are in the urgent need of the rehabilitation or the reconstruction due to various factors like lack of detailing, environmental effects, poor maintenance, and poor workmanship during construction etc. The experimental study involves the confinement of reinforced concrete beams of M30 using GFRP (Glass fiber reinforced polymer), CFRP (Carbon fiber reinforced polymer), BFRP (Basalt fiber reinforced polymer) to check its adequacy in load carrying capacity and deflection under service load. The wrapping is done for double and four layers using bi-directional fibre mat. Researches have concluded that externally bonded FRP with four layers of wrapping will have better resistance towards externally applied load and have lesser deflection compared to the other FRP's.
