Lessons from conformally reduced quantum gravity

Benjamin Knorr

Summary: By studying an enlarged truncation of conformally reduced quantum gravity, including operators up to the sixth order in derivatives, it was found that there is no asymptotically safe fixed point in the system beyond an Einstein-Hilbert approximation. These findings provide valuable lessons for general non-perturbative renormalisation group flows.

The nonperturbative functional renormalization group and its applications

N. Dupuis et al.

Summary: The renormalization group is crucial in physics for determining the low-energy properties of systems and searching for ultraviolet completions. The nonperturbative functional renormalization group (FRG) method is a modern implementation of Wilson's RG, providing a framework to study models with correlated degrees of freedom over long distances. It is based on an exact functional flow equation and has applications in various fields of physics.

Exact solutions and residual regulator dependence in functional renormalisation group flows

Benjamin Knorr

Summary: We investigated exact solutions to the functional renormalisation group equation of the O(N) model and the Gross-Neveu model at large N for 2 < d < 4 without specifying the form of the regulator. It was found that only universal quantities and qualitative features are regulator-independent, while coupling constants are typically arbitrary. A general algorithm was also provided to construct a concrete operator basis for truncations in the derivative expansion and the Blaizot-Mendez-Wschebor scheme.

Light charged fermions in quantum gravity

Gustavo P. de Brito et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of quantum gravity on a system of chiral fermions charged under an Abelian gauge group. It suggests that the interplay between gravity, gauge, and fermions can protect the lightness of fermions for a large enough number, but may lead to chiral symmetry breaking for a smaller number of fermions, which contradicts the observation of light fermions.

CDT Quantum Toroidal Spacetimes: An Overview

Jan Ambjorn et al.

Summary: Lattice formulations of gravity, such as CDT, are used to study non-perturbative aspects of quantum gravity. The higher-order phase transitions observed in CDT can define a continuum limit of the lattice theory, and studying the model with a toroidal spatial topology can provide insights into the nature of typical quantum fluctuations of geometry. Additionally, including massless scalar fields in the path integral of CDT can have a significant impact on the geometry.

de Sitter instanton from Euclidean dynamical triangulations

Scott Bassler et al.

Summary: By studying the emergence of de Sitter space in Euclidean dynamical triangulations (EDT), researchers were able to relate lattice parameters to the partition function of Euclidean quantum gravity. Through simulations, they extracted a value of the renormalized Newton's constant, consistent with previous determinations from scalar particle interactions. The presence of the same universal constant in different sectors of the theory suggests that EDT may offer a viable formulation of quantum gravity.

Curvature bound from gravitational catalysis in thermal backgrounds

Holger Gies et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phenomenon of gravitational catalysis at finite temperature, deriving a thermal bound on spacetime curvature to identify unaffected parameter regions. The results suggest a strong dependence of the phenomenon on curvature details and its application in quantum gravity scenarios, providing a temperature-dependent upper bound on the number of fermion flavors. The temperature dependence derived in this work helps track the fate of gravitational catalysis during the thermal history of the (quantum) Universe.

Exploring new corners of asymptotically safe unimodular quantum gravity

Gustavo P. de Brito et al.

Summary: The renormalization group flow of unimodular quantum gravity was studied with different truncations of the effective action, searching for nontrivial fixed-point solutions for polynomial expansions. The system included beta functions for gravitational couplings, anomalous dimensions of graviton and ghosts, and investigated the impact of different endomorphism parameter choices on fixed-point structure. Evidence for nontrivial fixed points was found, with the f(R) truncation showing better convergence properties, and compatibility with the Standard Model and its extensions was explored when matter fields were included.

Existence and construction of exact functional-renormalization-group flows of a UV-interacting scalar field theory

Jobst Ziebell

Summary: The study proves the existence of Euclidean-invariant exact solutions to the Wetterich equation in dimensions greater than 2 and provides a construction procedure. The construction method generates momentum-dependent correlation functions to all orders and the resulting correlators are bounded at all regulator scales. Additionally, the given construction principle can be extended to other systems and may be useful in studying general properties of exact solutions.
