Polymers Exhibiting Lower Critical Solution Temperatures as a Route to Thermoreversible Gelators for Healthcare

Michael T. Cook et al.

Summary: Materials with smart behavior that can change their properties in response to external stimuli have enabled innovative technologies for healthcare applications. Thermoreversible gelators, which undergo reversible phase changes triggered by temperature, are being used for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and 3D printing. Challenges in translating these technologies include the lack of rigorous toxicological evaluation.

Modulation of the volume phase transition temperature of thermo-responsive gels

A. D. Drozdov et al.

Summary: Thermo-responsive gels exhibit significant swelling below their volume phase transition temperature, which can be fine-tuned by incorporating monomers and polymer chains. A model is developed to describe the mechanical response and equilibrium swelling of such gels, with analytical formulas derived for the effect of molar fraction on the transition temperature. Good agreement is demonstrated between the model predictions and experimental data.

Pickering emulsions stabilized by thermoresponsive oligo(ethylene glycol)-based microgels: Effect of temperature-sensitivity on emulsion stability

Marie-Charlotte Tatry et al.

Summary: The experiment focused on the behavior of pOEMA microgels with different hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance at liquid interfaces and in emulsions, finding that the VPTT of the microgels can be precisely tuned by changing the number of ethylene oxide groups. The swelling ratio and deformability of the microgels increase with increasing hydrophilicity.

Amphiphilic Graft Copolymers Capable of Mixed-Mode Interaction as Alternative Nonviral Transfection Agents

Ivonne L. Diaz Ariza et al.

Summary: Nonviral gene delivery vectors are less toxic and immunogenic compared to viral ones, but improvements in efficacy are still needed, with challenges in effective complexation, protection, and intracellular dissociation. Research on copolymers with multiple interactive functions has shown that optimizing transfection benefits from treatment as a multiparameter problem.
