Ag-Sr doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles loaded chitosan/gelatin coating for orthopedic implants

Raja Aqib et al.

Summary: This study investigated the surface and biological properties of Ag-Sr-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticle loaded chitosan/gelatin coatings deposited on 316L stainless steel by electrophoretic deposition. The optimized EPD parameters resulted in homogenous coatings with suitable wettability, adhesion strength, antibacterial properties, and promotion of osteoblast cell proliferation. The coatings also developed HA crystals upon immersion in simulated body fluid. The results confirmed the composite coatings' effectiveness against Escherichia coli cells.

Summary: In this study, multifunctional stratified antibacterial and bioactive coatings were deposited and characterised on stainless steel substrates using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and radio frequency (RF) co-sputtering techniques. The comparison between the physicomechanical and biological characteristics of different coatings structures showed that the multi-layered coatings exhibited superior antibacterial effects and cell attachment capabilities.

Porous bioactive glass micro- and nanospheres with controlled morphology: developments, properties and emerging biomedical applications

Kai Zheng et al.

Summary: Porous bioactive glass micro/nanospheres (PBGSs) have emerged as attractive biomaterials in biomedical applications, with controllable particle size and pore structure critical for their functionality. Sol-gel processing is the primary method used for PBGSs synthesis, allowing for control over the chemical compositions and pore structures. Recent progress has been made in the synthesis of PBGSs with sophisticated pore structures, and their achievements in bone tissue regeneration, wound healing, drug delivery, bioimaging, and cancer therapy have been highlighted.

Chitosan/gelatin-based bioactive and antibacterial coatings deposited via electrophoretic deposition

Aneeqa Nawaz et al.

Summary: This study successfully deposited chitosan/gelatin/Ag-Mn MBGNs composite on the PEEK/BG layer, showing good antibacterial activity and biocompatibility. The addition of Mn and Ag had a significant effect on bacteria growth, but showed negligible impact on the bioactivity of the coatings. The multi-structured coatings exhibited suitable wettability and surface roughness for orthopedic applications.
