In vivo methods and applications of xenon-129 magnetic resonance

Helen Marshall et al.

Summary: Hyperpolarised gas lung MRI using xenon-129 can provide detailed 3D images of the ventilated lung airspaces, quantify lung microstructure, and examine detailed aspects of lung function such as gas exchange. It is sensitive to early lung disease changes, and can be used to monitor gas exchange in the lungs, perfusion of the brain and kidneys, and blood oxygenation. The methods and applications of in vivo Xe-129 MR in humans focus on polarisation by optical pumping, radiofrequency coil and pulse sequence design, and examining lung ventilation, microstructure, gas exchange, blood oxygenation, and perfusion of the brain and kidneys.

PHIP hyperpolarized [1-13C] pyruvate and [1-13C]acetate esters via PH-INEPT polarization transfer monitored by 13C NMR and MRI

Alexandra Svyatova et al.

Summary: The study compared the efficiency of para-hydrogen-induced polarization of C-13 nuclei by side-arm hydrogenation (PHIP-SAH) with magnetic field cycling (MFC) for H-1 to C-13 polarization transfer. The pulse-sequence transfer approach showed potential benefits in some applications, despite lower C-13 polarization levels compared to MFC. However, significant C-13 NMR signal enhancement was achieved relative to thermal polarization.

Nuclear hyperpolarization of (1-13C)-pyruvate in aqueous solution by proton-relayed side-arm hydrogenation

Laurynas Dagys et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new method, PR-SAH, which reduces the cost and effort needed to prepare the precursor by using an intermediate proton to transfer polarization from the side-arm to the C-13-labelled site of the pyruvate. This method shows promise in hyperpolarizing C-13-labelled metabolites in solution, conducted entirely in high magnetic field.
