Degradation of neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine by UV254 activated persulfate: Kinetic model and reaction pathways

Boyin Yan et al.

Summary: The degradation of BMAA in the UV254/persulfate system follows a pseudofirst-order kinetic model, with SO4· identified as the major radical contributing to the degradation. The pH significantly affects the degradation rate, with the highest rate achieved at pH 8. However, the presence of water matrix components inhibits the degradation process.

Performance of L-Cu&Mn-nZVFe@B nanomaterial on nitrate selective reduction under UV irradiation and persulfate activation in the presence of oxalic acid

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: A novel nanomaterial was synthesized and applied to selective reduction of nitrate, showing significant improvement in nitrate conversion under UV irradiation and persulfate activation in the presence of oxalic acid. The high nitrate conversion was attributed to the formation of galvanic cells accelerating the generation of electrons. Additionally, the coexistence of Cu2O and MnO2 exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance, leading to high N-2 selectivity and efficient CO2 generation.

Pyrite-activated persulfate for simultaneous 2,4-DCP oxidation and Cr(VI) reduction

Peng He et al.

Summary: Organic pollutants and heavy metals in wastewater were effectively removed simultaneously using pyrite and persulfate system, where SO4 center dot- and (OH)-O-center dot radicals were identified as the oxidative species responsible for degrading 2,4-DCP. Pyrite acted as a catalyst for Cr(VI) reduction, with Fe identified as the main catalytic site, showcasing a new strategy for the simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organic compounds in wastewater treatment.

Catalytic oxidation of naproxen in cobalt spinel ferrite decorated Ti3C2Tx MXene activated persulfate system: Mechanisms and pathways

Aqsa Fayyaz et al.

Summary: Naproxen (NPX) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can have detrimental effects on human and ecosystem health at certain concentrations in aqueous environments. A nanocatalyst composed of MXene nanosheets and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles was successfully fabricated for the degradation of NPX, with high removal efficiency achieved. Radical and nonradical pathways were found to be involved in the catalytic degradation process, indicating the promising potential of CoFe2O4@MXene/PS system for treating water polluted with NPX.

Benzophenone-3 degradation via UV/H2O2 and UV/persulfate reactions

Young-Min Lee et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the UV/PS reaction is more efficient in degrading BP3 in water compared to the UV/H2O2 reaction, with degradation efficiency increasing with higher dosage of H2O2 and persulfate. BP3 degradation primarily occurs at pH 6 and is influenced by water components such as HCO3-, NO3-, Cl-, Br- ions, as well as humic acid.

Efficient activation of persulfate by a magnetic recyclable rape straw biochar catalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride in water

Hongxia Huang et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized a recyclable magnetic rape straw biochar (MRSB) catalyst using abandoned rape straw, which exhibited high catalytic activity for activating persulfate (PS) to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in water and maintained good recyclability. The MRSB catalyst promoted the generation of sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide radicals in the PS system, showing a 13.24-fold higher reaction rate compared to rape straw biochar (RSB).

Preparation of porous silicate supported micro-nano zero-valent iron from copper slag and used as persulfate activator for removing organic contaminants

Caiqi Gao et al.

Summary: Porous silicate supported micro-nano zero-valent iron (PSi@ZVI) prepared from copper slag through carbothermal reduction technology was used as a persulfate activator for organic contaminant removal. The activator's properties were affected by preparation conditions, with increased dosages of PSi@ZVI or PS and higher reaction temperatures improving the removal rate of contaminants. PSi@ZVI demonstrated excellent activator ability in a wide pH range and good degradation capability for various dyes, with sulfate radical being the main active species in the system.

Trace Cu(II) can enhance the degradation of Orange II in Fe(II)/ hydroxylamine/persulfate system

Jinpeng Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of trace Cu(II) enhances the degradation efficiency of Fe(II)/HA/PS system and broadens the applicable pH range. Optimal dosages of Fe(II), Cu(II), and PS promote the degradation of Orange II, while excessive or inadequate HA dosage is not conducive. Scavenger experiments indicate that SO4 center dot- is the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the system.
