Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ removal by designed functionalized swelling high-charged micas

F. J. Osuna et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of a new family of nanomaterials, swelling high charge micas, in removing Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ from aqueous solutions. Experimental results demonstrated that these micas are efficient heavy metal adsorbents, with Na-M2 being the best adsorbent for Pb2+ and Cd2+, and MEA-M2 for Hg2+.

Goethite dispersed corn straw-derived biochar for phosphate recovery from synthetic urine and its potential as a slow-release fertilizer

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, goethite-biochar composites were developed and used for phosphate recovery from urine. The amorphous structure of the composites showed higher adsorption capacity compared to crystalline goethite, making it a promising alternative for slow-phosphate-release fertilizers. The active sites for phosphate adsorption were identified as the Fe-OH bonds forming inner-sphere complexes.

Effective immobilization of hexavalent chromium from drinking water by nano-FeOOH coating activated carbon: Adsorption and reduction

Bing Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that coating nano alpha-FeOOH onto activated carbon significantly enhances the immobilization of Cr(VI) in drinking water. The transformation of adsorbed Cr(VI) to stable Cr(III) compounds reduces the release of Cr, making nFeOOH@AC more effective than pristine AC. Additionally, the enhanced capacity and longer lifespan of nFeOOH@AC for Cr(VI) immobilization make it a promising approach for drinking water treatment.

Haihao Peng et al.

Summary: N-doped nanoporous carbon derived from Zn-ZIF-L via KCl exfoliation and carbonization exhibited effective N atom doping, low degree of graphitization, and high defects, resulting in enhanced adsorption capacity. The NC-800 showed fast and efficient adsorption of TC with a maximum adsorption capacity of 347.06 mg g(-1), and could maintain high adsorption levels after four cycles, making it a promising adsorbent for water treatment applications.

Adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by magnetic activated carbon and its mechanism

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: Magnetized activated carbons (MAC) prepared from rape straw powder showed high adsorption capacities for Pb(II) and Cd(II) due to surface active points, with adsorption behavior conforming to the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated spontaneous and endothermic reactions. Adjusting the pH of the solution could enhance adsorption capacity, but competitive adsorption occurred in the presence of high-valent ions. Adsorption mechanisms included electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, and co-precipitation. The MAC material showed potential for heavy metal ion removal from aqueous solutions.

Potassium phosphate/magnesium oxide modified biochars: Interfacial chemical behaviours and Pb binding performance

Qiuci Miao et al.

Summary: Chemical modification of biochar with phosphate/magnesium increased the sorption capacity of lead in aqueous solutions by enhancing the active functional groups on the biochar surface. The sorption process involved chemisorption, precipitation, complexation, and cation exchange mechanisms. Phosphate/magnesium-modified biochar showed better stability and efficiency in lead removal compared to unmodified biochar.

Cadmium removal by MgCl2 modified biochar derived from crayfish shell waste: Batch adsorption, response surface analysis and fixed bed filtration

Dawei Zhang et al.

Summary: Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a serious environmental problem with risks to water bodies and human health. This study investigated Cd(II) adsorption onto MgCl2 modified biochar, finding that MgC600 had a higher adsorption capacity due to enhanced ion exchange ability. A quadratic regression model accurately predicted the optimal adsorption conditions, and a new BJP model was proposed for fixed bed filtration process, accurately describing and promoting its application in wastewater treatment.

Uptake of Pb(II) onto microplastic-associated biofilms in freshwater: Adsorption and combined toxicity in comparison to natural solid substrates

Kun Qi et al.

Summary: This study found that microplastic-associated biofilms can enhance the adsorption capacity of Pb(II) onto microplastics in urban lakes and reservoirs, but natural substrates still exhibit higher adsorption capacity. Ionic strength and pH significantly influence the adsorption of Pb(II) on all solid substrates, especially under neutral conditions where competitive adsorption occurs between anthropogenic and natural substrates.
