Dispelling a myth on dense neutrino media: fast pairwise conversions depend on energy

Shashank Shalgar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dependence of fast pairwise neutrino conversions on neutrino energy and vacuum frequency, revealing a significant impact of neutrino energy on the fast pairwise conversion process. Additionally, the study highlights the behavior of pairwise conversions in the non-linear regime, emphasizing the importance of more sophisticated modeling in order to assess their potential impact on source physics.

New Developments in Flavor Evolution of a Dense Neutrino Gas

Irene Tamborra et al.

Summary: Neutrino-neutrino refraction plays a key role in flavor evolution in core-collapse supernovae, neutron star mergers, and the early Universe. Pairwise neutrino scattering can lead to collective flavor conversions, regulated by the neutrino number density and angular distributions of electron neutrinos and antineutrinos. Fast pairwise conversions, often overlooked, could impact the hydrodynamics of astrophysical sources and the synthesis of heavy elements near the neutrino decoupling region.

On the characteristics of fast neutrino flavor instabilities in three-dimensional core-collapse supernova models

Sajad Abbar et al.

Summary: The study identifies the occurrence of fast neutrino flavor instabilities in core-collapse supernova simulations, highlighting the impact of scattering on these instabilities. It also suggests that the failure to achieve a successful explosion in heavier supernova models may hinder the occurrence of fast instabilities in the post-shock region.

Change of direction in pairwise neutrino conversion physics: The effect of collisions

Shashank Shalgar et al.

Summary: The study explores the interaction between collisions and fast conversions of neutrinos in neutrino-dense sources. Surprisingly, collisions may enhance fast flavor conversions rather than damping them. It is crucial to consider the feedback of collisions on neutrino angular distributions in order to reliably predict the flavor outcome in fast pairwise conversions.

Fast flavor oscillations in dense neutrino media with collisions

Joshua D. Martin et al.

Summary: Our study investigates the impact of nonzero neutrino splitting and elastic neutrino-nucleon collisions on fast neutrino oscillations. We found that small neutrino mass splitting and the neutrino mass hierarchy have minimal effects on fast oscillation waves, which can propagate near the neutrino sphere essentially unimpeded but are damped on larger scales. This damping is due to modifications in the dispersion relation of the oscillation waves in the neutrino medium and flattening of the neutrino angular distributions over time.

Fast neutrino flavor conversions in one-dimensional core-collapse supernova models with and without muon creation

Francesco Capozzi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of muons and their interactions with neutrinos on fast flavor conversions in dense environments, notably observing fast instabilities in the μ-τ sector. One-dimensional simulations reveal that crossings below the supernova shock are a relatively common feature, contrary to previous literature. The importance of multidimensional simulations with muon creation is highlighted for future research.
