Liquid biopsy is a non-invasive method crucial for early diagnosis of breast cancer. The study showed that an integrated microfluidic system using field-effective-transistor biosensors can detect targeted microRNA associated with breast cancer accurately and rapidly.
Breast cancer is one of the leading cancers among women globally with a high mortality rate if not diagnosed in early stages. Liquid biopsy could serve as a non-invasive method for early diagnosis of biomarkers (such as microRNA-195) in blood associated with breast cancer. In this study, we developed an integrated microfluidic system for detecting targeted microRNA-195 by using field-effective-transistor biosensors to quantify an extremely low concentration of microRNA after extraction of extracellular vesicles and microRNAs in plasma. The entire process could be automated with a limit of detection as low as 1 fM. It could be therefore promising for accurate and rapid diagnosis of breast cancer.
