Higher-Order Topological Band Structures

Luka Trifunovic et al.

Summary: The interplay of topology and symmetry in a material's band structure can lead to various patterns of topological states on the boundary of a crystal with different dimensions. The protection of these higher-order boundary states is derived from topology, with constraints imposed by symmetry. Furthermore, the bulk-boundary correspondence of topological crystalline band structures and recent advances in the K-theoretic classification of such structures are discussed in this review.

Multicellularity of Delicate Topological Insulators

Aleksandra Nelson et al.

Summary: The passage introduces a class of topological insulators that are considered trivial, with a delicate topology that can be nullified by adding trivial bands. This multicellular topology is neither stable nor fragile, but rather intricate in nature.

Z2-enriched symmetry indicators for topological superconductors in the 1651 magnetic space groups

Seishiro Ono et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the diagnosis of topological superconductors, including the use of Z(2)-valued Pfaffian invariants for prediction and analysis, enhancing diagnostic power in roughly 60% of symmetry settings. The framework can be integrated with first-principles calculations for studying unconventional superconductivity, as demonstrated by the analysis of CaPtAs and CaSb2 superconductors, revealing the interplay between pairing symmetry and topological superconductivity.

Boundary-obstructed topological phases

Eslam Khalaf et al.

Summary: Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped phases of matter that cannot be deformed to a trivial phase without breaking symmetry or closing the bulk gap. Boundary obstructed topological phases (BOTPs) are characterized by the inability to deform two bulk Hamiltonians to each other in an open system without closing the gap at high-symmetry surfaces. Additionally, BOTPs are associated with boundary signatures in open systems such as surface states or fractional corner charges.

Quadrupole moments, edge polarizations, and corner charges in the Wannier representation

Shang Ren et al.

Summary: The modern theory of polarization allows for determining the macroscopic and corner charge of an insulator based on bulk and edge properties, respectively. It explores the quantization of corner charge in the absence of bulk symmetries, developing a formalism to predict corner charge solely from calculations on ribbon geometries of two different orientations. The dependence of interior quadrupole and edge dipole contributions on the gauge used to construct Wannier functions is investigated, showing that while individually gauge dependent, their sum is gauge independent.

Quantized surface magnetism and higher-order topology: Application to the Hopf insulator

Penghao Zhu et al.

Summary: This study examines the topological aspects of the magnetic moment contributed by the surfaces of a three-dimensional crystallite assumed to be insulating, and the relationship between the surface magnetic compressibility and the net chirality of hinge modes on the surface of the crystallite.

Teleportation of Berry curvature on the surface of a Hopf insulator

A. Alexandradinata et al.

Summary: The paradigm of topological insulators states that an energy gap separates conduction and valence bands with opposite topological invariants. This study proposes that equal-energy bands with opposite Chern invariants can be spatially separated on the opposite facets of a finite crystalline Hopf insulator. The nontrivial boundary states arising from a generalized Weyl equation provide insights into the behavior of Berry curvature in this system.
