Bioavailability, mobility and leaching of phosphorus in a Mediterranean agricultural soil (ne Spain) amended with different doses of biosolids

M. M. Jordan et al.

Summary: The precipitation of sparingly soluble calcium phosphate in calcareous soils decreases the bioavailability of macronutrients, but sludge fertilizers can provide phosphorus and adjust soil pH. The loss of soil nutrients due to irrigation or rain can contaminate groundwater. The formation of octacalcium phosphate may play a dominant role in the immobilization of phosphorus during its movement in the percolation column, although the results from X-ray diffraction are inconclusive.

Compost and Sewage Sludge for the Improvement of Soil Chemical and Biological Quality of Mediterranean Agroecosystems

Enrica Picariello et al.

Summary: The study validated the use of quality biowaste compost and sewage sludge in a Mediterranean agroecosystem, with biowaste compost showing positive effects on soil organic matter and phosphorous concentrations as well as on microbial community functionality. In contrast, the selected sewage sludge did not benefit the microbial community or pose any dangers related to soil potentially toxic element concentrations and toxicity.

Effect of the Long-Term Application of Sewage Sludge to A Calcareous Soil on Its Total and Bioavailable Content in Trace Elements, and Their Transfer to the Crop

Armelle Zaragueta et al.

Summary: The study found that using sewage sludge as an organic fertilizer increased the concentration of specific trace metals in the soil and impacted crop yield, but did not exceed regulatory limits, likely due to the high content of carbonates and organic matter in the soil.

Role of organic amendment application on soil quality, functionality and greenhouse emission in a limestone quarry from semiarid ecosystems

Rocio Soria et al.

Summary: The study focused on the short and medium-term effects of organic amendments from a limestone quarry in SE Spain on the restoration of degraded soils in semiarid regions. It found that organic amendments significantly improved soil properties, with vegetable compost from garden waste or horticultural greenhouse crop residues being the most effective restoration treatments in terms of soil quality, CO2 emissions, and plant survival rates.

Soil organic carbon monitoring to assess agricultural climate change adaptation practices in Navarre, Spain

Rodrigo Anton et al.

Summary: The study assessed various climate change adaptation practices in the agricultural fields network in Navarre, Spain, highlighting that exogenous organic matter addition had the best effect on SOC storage, controlled grazing resulted in positive effects in temperate and semiarid regions, and conservation agriculture was more effective in the driest areas. The results emphasize the variability in SOC responses to changes in management practices in different bioclimatic zones.

Monitored Sewage Sludge Application Improves Soil Quality, Enhances Plant Growth, and Provides Evidence for Metal Remediation by Sorghum bicolor L

Ebrahem M. Eid et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of sewage sludge (SS) biosolids on soil quality and sorghum yield, finding that 30 g/kg SS was the recommended dose for enhancing plant growth and fertility, without posing health risks when consuming the produced grains. Additionally, soil pH decreased and micronutrient availability increased at this dosage, while S. bicolor showed potential for phytoextracting heavy metals.
