Information flow in context-dependent hierarchical Bayesian inference

Chris Fields et al.

Summary: Recent theories on context and its impact on inference are gaining significance in various fields including cognitive psychology, information science, and quantum information theory and computing. This paper introduces a novel and general approach to characterize contextuality using Chu spaces and Channel Theory as theories of information flow. By incorporating events, conditions, and measurement systems into conditional probabilities, information flows can be observed. This study compares the proposed architecture with other contextuality theories and examines its compatibility with negative probabilities and quantum contextuality. Furthermore, contextuality is related to the Frame Problem in terms of limitations on the observational and inferential capabilities of finite agents.

The ant colony as a test for scientific theories of consciousness

Daniel A. Friedman et al.

Summary: The study of consciousness lacks a unified definition and testing system, leading to a confusing array of theories. A legitimate reverse test is needed to calibrate different frameworks and provide validation. The introduction of the Ant Colony Test (ACT) serves as a rigorous method for this purpose.

Integrated information as a possible basis for plant consciousness

Summary: The article suggests that consciousness in plants may manifest at a minimal level, not according to human or animal standards. Observations of plant meristems acting in a conscious manner highlight a potential diversity in the evolution of consciousness in biological organisms.

How intelligent is a cephalopod? Lessons from comparative cognition

Alexandra K. Schnell et al.

Summary: Cephalopods, such as octopus, cuttlefish, and squid, are considered the most cognitively advanced group of invertebrates, displaying highly developed perception, learning, memory, and behavioral flexibility. Hypotheses for the emergence of complex cognition in cephalopods suggest that predation, foraging, and competitive pressures may have driven cognitive complexity in these animals. However, current research on cephalopod cognition is largely based on anecdotal evidence, and more studies are needed to understand the underlying mechanisms driving their behaviors.

Anesthetics and plants: no pain, no brain, and therefore no consciousness

Andreas Draguhn et al.

Summary: The review explores whether anesthetics provide evidence of consciousness in plants, concluding that plants lack neural anatomy and behaviors indicating pain. Therefore, anesthetics do not serve as empirical evidence for plant consciousness.

Fitness Beats Truth in the Evolution of Perception

Summary: Research indicates that natural selection may not necessarily favor percepts that accurately represent objective reality, but rather strategies that maximize fitness payoff. The advantage of this strategy increases with the size of perceptual space, supporting the Interface Theory of Perception.

Biomolecular Basis of Cellular Consciousness via Subcellular Nanobrains

Frantisek Baluska et al.

Summary: Cells are the fundamental building blocks of life on Earth, enclosed within a plasma membrane that distinguishes inside and outside domains. While unicellular organisms continue to live a cellular life, multicellular organisms have evolved into a multicellular existence. The Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC) model suggests that biological awareness, sentience, and consciousness are rooted in general cell biology, discussing the biomolecular structures and processes that support cellular consciousness from an evolutionary perspective.

Reference Frame Induced Symmetry Breaking on Holographic Screens

Chris Fields et al.

Summary: The interaction between finite quantum systems in a separable joint state can be seen as encoding classical information on an induced holographic screen. However, representing such interaction as a measurement causes quantum reference frames (QRFs) to induce decoherence, disrupting the symmetry of the holographic encoding in an observer-relative manner. Therefore, observable entanglement, contextuality, and classical memory are logical and temporal relationships between QRFs, with shared entanglement as a resource requiring a priori shared QRFs.
