Tailor-designed Ni-Co binary hydroxide electrodes for boosted supercapacitor applications: Smart selection of additives

Ahmed M. Abdelrahim et al.

Summary: In this study, cobalt hydroxide nanoparticles-based films were electrodeposited onto high surface area graphite felt for supercapacitor applications. Films prepared with iodate as additive showed the best performance with high specific capacitance and excellent rate capability, attributed to the generation of OH- during iodate reduction for better distribution of Co(OH)(2) throughout the matrix. Additionally, a binary film modified with Ni(OH)(2) exhibited outstanding rate capability at high power densities.

Ionic Liquids for Supercapacitive Energy Storage: A Mini-Review

Ling Miao et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely utilized in promising energy-storage systems, particularly in supercapacitors, due to their characteristic negligible vapor pressure and molecular designability. They play a crucial role in electrolyte exploitation and electrode synthesis, enhancing interfacial physicochemical interactions for superior electrode capacitances. Challenges and future outlooks associated with IL media/materials for next-generation supercapacitor applications are also discussed in the review.

Smart selection of fuel blends: Robust oxidation of formic acid in its blend with urea at NiOx/Pd nanoparticles-based binary anodes

Ghada H. El-Nowihy et al.

Summary: Enhanced oxidation of formic acid (FAO) is observed at NiOx/Pd/GC anodes in the presence of urea as a blending fuel, showing significantly increased FAO peak, fuel utilization, and electrode/electrolyte interface capacitance. This enhancement is believed to be due to urea forming bridged H-bonds with formate anions, facilitating favorable adsorption geometry for C-H scissoring. These findings underscore the importance of catalyst design and smart blending fuel selection for FA activity.

A robust strategy of solvent choice to synthesize optimal nanostructured carbon for efficient energy storage

Ziyang Song et al.

Summary: This study establishes a systematic strategy to select solvents effectively for carbon synthesis, based on Hansen solubility parameter and energy difference. By mixing different grades of solvents, a range of excellent solvents can be obtained for well-designed carbons. The as-synthesized carbons exhibit sphere-like superstructure and high surface area, showing fast electrochemical kinetics and high energy density in energy storage applications.
