Quality of life after sphincter preservation surgery or abdominoperineal resection for low rectal cancer (ASPIRE): A long-term prospective, multicentre, cohort study

Sung-Bum Kang et al.

Summary: This study found no significant difference in global quality of life scores between sphincter preservation surgery and abdominoperineal resection. However, abdominoperineal resection was associated with worse body image, micturition symptoms, male sexual problems, male confidence in erections, and urinary symptoms. Sphincter preservation surgery may be considered as a reasonable alternative for patients with low rectal cancer.
