Elevated serum mitochondrial DNA in females and lack of altered platelet mitochondrial methylation in patients with Parkinson′s disease

Amit Sharma et al.

Summary: The study identified an increased mitochondrial DNA concentration in the serum of female Parkinson's disease patients, which was not observed in males or in cerebrospinal fluid. Additionally, mitochondrial DNA methylation in platelets from Parkinson's patients did not show altered levels in some regions, while a lack of methylation was observed in other mitochondrial sites.

COVID-19 infection induces readily detectable morphologic and inflammation-related phenotypic changes in peripheral blood monocytes

Dan Zhang et al.

Summary: Excessive monocyte/macrophage activation in COVID-19 infection can lead to a cytokine storm and acute lung injury. Studies have shown morphological and functional differences in monocytes in patients with severe disease, which may be associated with disease severity and patient outcomes. Early detection and monitoring of these inflammatory monocytes using flow cytometry may assist in guiding treatment and prognosis for COVID-19 patients.

Circulating mitochondria! DNA is an early indicator of severe illness and mortality from COVID-19

Davide Scozzi et al.

Summary: The study suggests that elevated circulating MT-DNA levels in COVID-19 patients may serve as an early indicator for poor outcomes, with patients having higher levels being more likely to die or require intensive care. Additionally, circulating MT-DNA levels showed similar or superior predictive ability compared to established inflammatory markers and emerging investigational targets for COVID-19 therapy.

Of mitochondrion and COVID-19

Khalid Omer Alfarouk et al.

Summary: COVID-19, caused by viral infection, is a pandemic disease with high mortality rate, with most symptoms related to mitochondrial dysfunction. Targeting mitochondrion may offer a more rational treatment approach, and understanding the underlying causes could enhance the opportunity to treat COVID-19 effectively.

Summary: This review discusses key aspects of coronavirus biology and their implications for SARS-CoV-2 infections, treatment, and prevention strategies. Understanding virus-host interactions at the molecular level is crucial for developing effective intervention strategies. Summarizing the discoveries of SARS-CoV-2 infection and comparing it with other coronaviruses will support future preparedness and combat strategies.
