Groundwater Pollution and Human Health Risks in an Industrialized Region of Southern India: Impacts of the COVID-19 Lockdown and the Monsoon Seasonal Cycles

D. Karunanidhi et al.

Summary: Groundwater samples collected from 30 locations in the Coimbatore region of southern India showed a reduction in fluoride and nitrate pollution levels due to a decrease in industrial and agricultural activities during the COVID-19 lockdown, as well as dilution effects from seasonal rainfall. The chemical facies of groundwater shifted from Na-HCO3-Cl and Na-Cl to the Ca-HCO3 type, indicating the influence of factors such as mineral weathering, carbonate dissolution, and anthropogenic inputs on groundwater chemistry in the region. Overall, the findings suggest positive benefits to groundwater quality resulting from measures to control anthropogenic inputs of pollutants.

Flood susceptibility mapping and assessment using a novel deep learning model combining multilayer perceptron and autoencoder neural networks

Mohammad Ahmadlou et al.

Summary: Floods are one of the most destructive natural disasters globally, and researchers have been using data-driven techniques combined with remote sensing and geographic information systems for flood susceptibility mapping. A novel hybrid autoencoder-MLP model was proposed, which outperformed the traditional MLP model according to the AUROC criterion.

Using machine learning models, remote sensing, and GIS to investigate the effects of changing climates and land uses on flood

Mohammadtaghi Avand et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of climate and land use changes on flood susceptibility areas in the Tajan watershed in Iran. By predicting land use changes over the next 20 years and projecting future climate change, the study identified factors such as elevation, distance from river, land use, slope, and rainfall as the most important factors influencing flooding in the basin. The findings suggest that decreased forest cover, reduced rangeland near rivers, and increased rainfall could lead to increased probabilities of flooding in downstream areas of the watershed and near the sea. The RF model more accurately predicted flood probability compared to the GLMbayes model.

Assessing soil fertility index based on remote sensing and gis techniques with field validation in a semiarid agricultural ecosystem

Tulay Tuncay et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that SFI classes derived from satellite images can effectively assess soil fertility in arid and semiarid regions, showing a strong correlation with crop yield and vegetation index values. Therefore, SFI can be a valuable tool for evaluating the potential of soils for plant growing and management in similar ecologies.
