Physical activity, screen time and the COVID-19 school closures in Europe - An observational study in 10 countries

Summary: This study investigated the physical activity and screen time of European children during the COVID-19 pandemic. It found that over half of the children actively participated in online physical education classes, but most exceeded the recommended daily screen time of 2 hours. In countries less affected by the pandemic, outdoor play, daily routines, and online physical education activities were associated with healthy levels of physical activity and screen time.

Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, Sleep and Self-Regulation in Spanish Preschoolers during the COVID-19 Lockdown

Summary: This study examined the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on physical activity, sedentary time, sleep, and self-regulation in preschoolers. Results showed a decrease in physical activity, an increase in sedentary time, and worsening of sleep efficiency and self-regulation problems during the lockdown. Preschoolers who met the WHO physical activity recommendations had lower internalizing scores than non-active peers.

Impact of COVID-19 Confinement on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour in Spanish University Students: Role of Gender

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Spanish university students reduced moderate (-29.5%) and vigorous (-18.3%) physical activity, while increasing sedentary time (+52.7%). However, they spent more time on high intensity interval training (HIIT) (+18.2%) and mind-body activities such as yoga (+80.0%). Women adapted better to physical activity during confinement compared to men.

Physical activity behaviour and screen time in Dutch children during the COVID-19 pandemic: Pre-, during- and post-school closures

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 lockdown, Dutch children were less physically active and had increased screen time. Accelerometry measurements showed that sedentary time increased by 45 minutes per day, with only 20% of children reaching the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

Effect of the COVID-19 lockdown on physical activity and sedentary behaviors in French children and adolescents: New results from the ONAPS national survey

Summary: The study revealed that during the lockdown, physically active children and adolescents decreased their physical activity more compared to those who were initially inactive. Living in an urban environment was associated with a decrease in physical activity, an increase in sitting time, and an increase in children's screen time during lockdown.
