Isotopic evidence for axial tree stem methane oxidation within subtropical lowland forests

Luke C. Jeffrey et al.

Summary: Mechanisms moderating methane behavior along the soil-tree stem-atmosphere continuum remain unclear. Stable isotope analysis in subtropical lowland species revealed that methane in tree stems is mainly derived from soil sources. Significant methane enrichment was observed in upper tree stems, suggesting distinct gas sources and transport processes. Diel experiments showed higher oxidation rates in the afternoon compared to the morning.

Pulse labelling of deep soil layers in forest with 13CH4: testing a new method for tracing methane in the upper horizons, understorey vegetation and tree stems using laser-based spectrometry

C. Plain et al.

Summary: The study shows that tree stems in upland forests can emit methane produced in the soil, even when the soil acts as a net methane sink. Understorey vegetation does not directly contribute to methane emissions from the soil. Using (CH4)-C-13 pulse labelling and laser-based spectrometry for tracing is a promising approach to study methane transport from production to emission.

Bark-dwelling methanotrophic bacteria decrease methane emissions from trees

Luke C. Jeffrey et al.

Summary: Tree bark harbors unique microbial communities dominated by methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) that can significantly reduce methane emissions, indicating a potentially important methane sink for further research in the field of methane mitigation.
