The Rediscovery of Jan Ruyscher and Its Consequence

Flavia Fiorillo et al.

Summary: A comprehensive analysis utilizing various analytical techniques was conducted on a painting attributed to the seventeenth century Dutch artist Jan Ruyscher, revealing it to be a forgery created in the 20th century, possibly in the 1930s. The radiocarbon and spectroscopic analyses indicated that the wooden panel was cut down in the mid-eighteenth century, while the pictorial layers were applied in the twentieth century. This methodology sheds new light on the story of the object and attempts to identify the forger in disguise by comparing the painting with artworks of renowned forgers.

The importance of compound-specific radiocarbon analysis in source identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: A critical review

Miaolei Ya et al.

Summary: The sources of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are by-products of the combustion of organic matter, have been extensively studied in the fields of environmental monitoring, environmental forensics, and organic geochemistry. Various methods, including molecular diagnostic ratios, receptor models, and stable isotope analysis, have been used to identify the sources of PAHs. However, these conventional methods have limitations that lead to ambiguous results. Compound-specific radiocarbon analysis (CSRA) is a more effective method that focuses on molecular level radiocarbon signatures to identify the sources of PAHs. CSRA has the ability to distinguish the contributions of fossil fuels and biomass burning. In this review, we highlight the advantages of CSRA and its application and prospects in PAH source identification, providing a critical resource to expand the application of CSRA in environmental science. This is the first comprehensive review of the application of CSRA for PAH source identification.

Summary: This study reconstructed a continuous, annually resolved atmospheric C-14 concentration record from tree rings covering almost the entire last millennium. It revealed the presence of the Schwabe cycle over the entire time range and identified some potentially harmful strong solar events. The record also provides a useful benchmark for radiocarbon dating accuracy.

VOLUMES OF WORTH-DELIMITING THE SAMPLE SIZE FOR RADIOCARBON DATING OF PARCHMENT

Tuuli M. Kasso et al.

Summary: Medieval manuscripts are valuable archives for studying written history, but dating them using paleographic methods has limitations. This study established a radiocarbon dating procedure for parchments to improve dating accuracy, by combining clean-room chemical pretreatment, elemental analyzer combustion, automatic graphitization, and AMS measurements. The process reduced AMS target size and compared traditional combustion methods with a new Elemental Analyzer-based process that was faster and capable of producing smaller sample sizes. Further exploration is planned to study contamination issues and potentially date samples with as little as 50 µg of carbon.

Bone need not remain an elephant in the room for radiocarbon dating

Salvador Herrando-Perez

Summary: The variability in bone C-14 dating results is largely due to different laboratory pretreatment protocols. A survey of 132 experts from 25 countries showed that while many were wary of contamination, a significant portion relied on laboratories to choose the pretreatment method and could not rank the reliability of different methods. Ultrafiltration was popular, while purification by XAD resins was mainly used by American researchers. Amino acid hydroxyproline isolation and dating was considered the most reliable but expensive and time-consuming.

Summary: The Arp Nouva peat bog in the upper Ferret Valley has been studied using radiocarbon dating, confirming that it was formed by rock avalanche deposits blocking the Bella Combe torrent. Careful sample preparation was crucial in obtaining accurate C-14 ages and avoiding chronological reconstruction errors. Dating the last Middle Palaeolithic of the Crimean Peninsula: New hydroxyproline AMS dates from the site of Kabazi II

Luke Spindler et al.

Summary: Radiocarbon dating of bone and charcoal from Middle and Upper Paleolithic sites is challenging due to low residual levels of radiocarbon, which can be influenced by contaminating carbon. The reanalysis of Kabazi II site in Crimea using a new dating method suggests that the Western Crimean Mousterian culture may be older than previously thought, dating to over 50,000 cal BP. In the absence of reliable pretreatment methods, many Crimean sites are considered minimum ages, with little robust evidence to suggest Neanderthals were present in Crimea after 40,000 cal BP.
