Use of Euphorbia sp. (Euphorbiaceae) as biofuel feedstock for semi-arid and arid lands

Shaik Sha Valli Khan Patan et al.

Summary: Plant-based biofuels, particularly those derived from succulent, latex-yielding species of Euphorbia, are promising renewable alternatives to fossil fuels due to their high productivity, drought tolerance, and minimal freshwater footprint. These biofuels have similar or superior properties compared to fossil fuels, making them a viable option for sustainable energy production. Research on Euphorbia-based biofuels includes biomass harvesting and processing, biocrude extraction and refinement, blending with diesel, and utilization of spent residues for the production of bioethanol and other valuable co-products, addressing major challenges and future opportunities in biofuel development.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis of castor seeds C-lignin in deep eutectic solvents

Chunquan Liu et al.

Summary: By catalytic hydrogenolysis of castor seed coats with deep eutectic solvents, naturally grown C-lignin can be extracted and depolymerized into monomeric catechols with high efficiency. High selectivity towards 4-propyl catechol was observed in DESs reactions, providing an efficient step for producing valuable catechol compounds.

Progress in application of the pyrolytic lignin from pyrolysis of biomass

Lijun Zhang et al.

Summary: Bio-oil, produced by the pyrolysis of biomass, is a mixture of condensable volatiles. The effective conversion of bio-oil to biofuel faces the key challenge of coke formation, especially at high temperatures. Pyrolytic lignin, derived from the lignin fraction in biomass, is a major component of the heavy organics in bio-oil, and understanding its properties is crucial for various applications and conversions.

Guidelines for performing lignin-first biorefining

Mahdi M. Abu-Omar et al.

Summary: The valorisation of lignin is crucial for the economic viability of the lignocellulosic biorefining industry. The lignin-first biorefining approach, which considers lignin valorisation in the design phase, has been shown to make the fullest use of lignocellulose. Despite the diverse approaches to reporting and analyzing results from lignin-first methods, we propose guidelines for analyzing critical data in order to facilitate direct comparisons between studies.
