Optical microscopy to study single nanoparticles electrochemistry: From reaction to motion

Jean-Marc Noel et al.

Summary: The use of label-free optical imaging coupled to an electrochemical actuation has been shown to be an effective tool to probe the physical and electrochemical properties of single nanoparticles with high resolution and sensitivity. This approach is particularly relevant for optimizing nanoparticles used as electrode materials by establishing clear structure-motion/reactivity relationships.

Tuning Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence Intensity Enhancement Using Hexagonal Lattice Arrays of Gold Nanodisks

Thomas S. Heiderscheit et al.

Summary: Electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) microscopy is a promising technique for mapping chemical reactions on single nanoparticles. By coupling ECL dyes with plasmonic nanoparticles, such as hexagonal arrays of gold nanodisks, signal intensity can be significantly improved. Varying the lattice spacing of these nanoparticles can result in a 23-fold enhancement of ECL intensity due to increased dye-array near-field coupling.

Single-Nanoparticle Coulometry Method with High Sensitivity and High Throughput to Study the Electrochemical Activity and Oscillation of Single Nanocatalysts

Mohan Lin et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made to explore nanocatalysts with high electro-catalytic performance and less loading of precious metals by developing electrochemical methods with high spatial resolution at the single nanoparticle level. A highly sensitive single-nanoparticle coulometry method has been successfully developed to study the electrochemical activity and oscillation of single PtTe nanocatalysts. This method enables the transition from undetectable electric signals to strong localized surface plasmon resonance scattering signals, providing valuable insights into the behavior and mechanisms of nanocatalysts in the electrochemistry community.

Electrogenerated chemiluminescence detection of single entities

Wei Zhao et al.

Summary: Electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) is a process in which light is produced by excited luminophores generated during redox reactions induced by electrochemistry. Analyzing single entities such as molecules, micro/nanoparticles, and cells using ECL can provide insights into new truths of nature that may be hidden in complex systems or averaged out in ensemble assays.

High-resolution imaging of catalytic activity of a single graphene sheet using electrochemiluminescence microscopy

Hui Zhu et al.

Summary: By mapping the electrocatalytic activity of a single graphene sheet with nanometer resolution using electrochemiluminescence (ECL) microscopy, this study effectively avoids the problem of overlapping ECL emissions from adjacent regions and achieves nanometer spatial resolution for the first time. The varied adsorption of hydrogen peroxide on the graphene surface leads to unsynchronized ECL emission, allowing the ECL intensity of each pixel to reflect the electrocatalytic features of the graphene surface with a resolution of 400 nm.
