Ventilation management and clinical outcomes in invasively ventilated patients with COVID-19 (PRoVENT-COVID): a national, multicentre, observational cohort study

Michela Botta et al.

Summary: This national study in the Netherlands investigated the ventilation management of invasively ventilated patients with COVID-19 during the first month of the outbreak. Lung-protective ventilation with low tidal volume and prone positioning were common practices. The study provides valuable insights for future trials and interpretation of findings in this patient population.

The swedish covid-19 intensive care cohort: Risk factors of ICU admission and ICU mortality

Bjorn Ahlstrom et al.

Summary: The study found that factors such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, chronic renal failure, asthma, obesity, solid organ transplant recipient status, and immunosuppressant medications were independent risk factors for ICU admission. Oral anticoagulants were found to be protective. Meanwhile, stroke, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and treatment with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone inhibitors (RAASi) were independent risk factors for ICU mortality, with statin treatment being protective.

Case Fatality Rates for Patients with COVID-19 Requiring Invasive Mechanical Ventilation A Meta-analysis

Zheng Jie Lim et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the case fatality rate of COVID-19 patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation is around 45%, but varying reporting methods result in a wide range of fatality rates across studies. Fatality rates are higher in older patients and in early pandemic epicenters.

Ventilatory Variables and Mechanical Power in Patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Eduardo L. Costa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of mechanical power on mortality in ARDS patients, and found that driving pressure, respiratory rate, and mechanical power were significant predictors of mortality, with driving pressure having four times the impact on mortality compared to respiratory rate.

Summary: The zoonotic SARS-CoV-2 virus causing COVID-19 has devastating consequences worldwide, affecting primarily the respiratory system but also leading to long-term complications. Understanding the pathophysiology and immune response of COVID-19 is crucial for optimizing patient care and treatment strategies.

Dead space estimates may not be independently associated with 28-day mortality in COVID-19 ARDS

Luis Morales-Quinteros et al.

Summary: Estimates of wasted ventilation, such as the dead space fraction and ventilatory ratio, were significantly higher in non-survivors compared to survivors among COVID-19-related ARDS patients. However, quantifying this impairment of ventilation did not add prognostic information beyond baseline risk factors in this study.

Summary: Among more than 4000 critically ill patients with COVID-19 admitted to our ICUs, 90-day mortality was 31% and decreased from 42 to 25% over the study period. Mortality was higher in older, diabetic, obese and severe ARDS patients.
