Small molecules regulating reactive oxygen species homeostasis for cancer therapy

Junmin Zhang et al.

Summary: Regulating intracellular ROS levels may be an effective strategy for cancer prevention or treatment. This can be achieved through chemoprevention to reduce ROS production pathways, or through ROS-mediated anticancer therapy to stimulate ROS clearance, ultimately inhibiting tumor growth.

The toxicity of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) to vascular endothelial cells

Wei Xie et al.

Summary: The environmental fine particulate matter PM2.5 is considered a significant threat to human health, particularly through its impact on vascular endothelial cells (VECs). Understanding and reducing the toxic effects of PM2.5 on VECs could help prevent the occurrence and fatality of various diseases.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) promotes IgE-mediated mast cell activation through ROS/Gadd45b/JNK axis

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that PM2.5 facilitated IgE-mediated mast cell degranulation and cytokine expression through regulating ROS production via the Gadd45b/MEKK4/JNK pathway. This suggests a mechanism by which PM2.5 exacerbates allergic responses by activating mast cells through oxidative stress pathways.

Loss of primary cilia promotes mitochondria-dependent apoptosis in thyroid cancer

Junguee Lee et al.

Summary: The primary cilium is well-preserved in human differentiated thyroid cancers, but specific types of thyroid cancers associated with abnormalities in mitochondrial function show reduced biogenesis of primary cilia. Experimental results suggest that defective ciliogenesis caused by loss-of-function of primary cilia in thyroid cancer cells can lead to apoptogenic stimuli and mitochondrial-dependent apoptotic cell death.

Chronic exposure to diesel exhaust may cause small airway wall thickening without lumen narrowing: a quantitative computerized tomography study in Chinese diesel engine testers

Hong Liu et al.

Summary: DE exposure is associated with small airway wall thickening without lumen narrowing, which may be an early feature of airway remodeling. The impact of DE exposure on FEV1 can be partially explained by the wall area percent. The study also suggests that factors other than carbon cores may contribute to the changes in airway dimensions.

Summary: A study evaluated the protective effects of SFN from cruciferous vegetables against PM2.5-induced oxidative damage, showing that SFN effectively alleviates oxidative damage in human ARPE-19 cells via its antioxidant effects.
