Cardiac Autophagy Deficiency Attenuates ANP Production and Disrupts Myocardial-Adipose Cross Talk, Leading to Increased Fat Accumulation and Metabolic Dysfunction

Erfei Song et al.

Summary: The study showed that cardiomyocyte-specific autophagy deficiency in mice resulted in metabolic dysfunction, including increased body weight, reduced insulin sensitivity, and altered ambulatory activity. This deficiency also affected myocardial-adipose cross talk by decreasing atrial natriuretic peptide levels, leading to adverse metabolic consequences. Restoring normal ANP levels corrected the metabolic dysfunction in autophagy-deficient mice.

Xanthine oxidase inhibition attenuates doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in mice

Yoshiro Tanaka et al.

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that high serum uric acid is associated with left ventricular dysfunction, and xanthine oxidase activation plays a critical role in this process. In a study on doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, it was found that cardiac tissue xanthine oxidase activation led to impaired left ventricular function, which was attenuated by xanthine oxidase inhibitors through reduction of oxidative stress and modulation of purine metabolism.

Possible Association Between Body Temperature and B-Type Natriuretic Peptide in Patients With Cardiovascular Diseases

Ryeonshi Kang et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in BNP is associated with an increase in body temperature, while patients with left ventricular dysfunction tend to have a decrease in body temperature. This suggests that NP can help retain body heat in unfavorable hemodynamic conditions.

Brown adipose tissue is associated with cardiometabolic health

Tobias Becher et al.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of over 50,000 patients' F-18-FDG PET/CT scans revealed that individuals with brown adipose tissue had lower odds of cardiometabolic conditions. The presence of brown adipose tissue was independently correlated with lower odds of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. The beneficial effects of brown adipose tissue were more pronounced in individuals with overweight or obesity, suggesting a potential role in mitigating the deleterious effects of obesity.

Unexpectedly Low Natriuretic Peptide Levels in Patients With Heart Failure

Katherine N. Bachmann et al.

Summary: A subset of patients with confirmed heart failure or cardiac dysfunction have unexpectedly low BNP levels, with obesity being the strongest predictor of this phenomenon. Our findings support the possible existence of NP deficiency, making some individuals more susceptible to volume or pressure overload.

Close linkage between blood total ketone body levels and B-type natriuretic peptide levels in patients with cardiovascular disorders

Yusuke Kashiwagi et al.

Summary: The study showed that blood total ketone body levels in patients with cardiovascular disorders were significantly associated with B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels, but not with other hemodynamic parameters. The findings suggest that the elevation of blood ketone body levels might be more strongly stimulated by the increase in BNP, rather than hemodynamic deterioration. BNP may induce the elevation of ketone body levels for use as an important alternative fuel in the failing heart.

Summary: The study showed that overexpression of NEP in cardiomyocytes leads to increased degradation of natriuretic peptides in the heart, resulting in an exaggerated hypertrophic and fibrotic response to pressure overload.
