Non-structural carbohydrates mediate seasonal water stress across Amazon forests

Caroline Signori-Mueller et al.

Summary: Research on Amazon canopy tree species found that during the dry season, there were significant variations in total NSC concentrations and its soluble sugar and starch components in both leaves and branches. In the driest sites, there was a notable increase in the proportion of soluble sugars in leaves, suggesting their important role in mediating water stress.

Root carbon and nutrient homeostasis determines downy oak sapling survival and recovery from drought

Sheng-Nan Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study found that fertilization had minor effects on saplings' physiological processes to cope with drought, but could reduce sapling mortality during extreme drought. Regardless of nutrient supply, Quercus pubescens showed increased soluble sugar concentration in all tissues with increasing drought intensity, mostly due to starch degradation. After 28 days of drought relief, tissue sugar concentrations decreased, reaching levels comparable to well-watered plants. Only during the recovery process from extreme drought, root NSC concentration strongly declined, leading to almost complete NSC depletion after 28 days of rewetting, simultaneous with new leaves flushing.
