Biogeochemical responses to internal-wave impacts in the continental margin off Dongsha Atoll in the Northern South China Sea

J. -J. Hung et al.

Summary: This study focused on the effects of nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) on nutrient-involved biogeochemical processes in the continental margin off Dongsha Atoll in the northern South China Sea. The shoaling of NLIWs was found to uplift cooler and nutrient-rich subsurface water into the nutrient-deplete surface, increasing nutrient concentrations and biological production. The NLIW forcing appears to be effective in supplying cooler and nutrient-rich water to the coral community associated with Dongsha Atoll, which is crucial for the future development and conservation of the coral ecosystem.
