Late Quaternary uplift and sea level fluctuations along the Tyrrhenian margin of Basilicata-northern Calabria (southern Italy): New constraints from raised paleoshorelines

Ciro Cerrone et al.

Summary: New analyses of marine terraces in the Tyrrhenian Sea margin of Basilicata - northern Calabria have been carried out, revealing impressive terraces and multiple relative sea-level fluctuations. The study shows a mean uplift rate of c. 0.25 mm/y since the Last Interglacial, contributing to the understanding of late Quaternary sea-level fluctuations and coeval ice sheets volume variations. The reconstructed sea level paleo-elevations of MIS 5a, 5c, and 6e are higher than reported in most sea level curves worldwide, but consistent with findings from the western Mediterranean.

Summary: Sea-level reconstructions using phreatic overgrowths on speleothems from caves in Mallorca, Spain provided snapshots of Neogene and Quaternary sea levels, with estimates of global mean sea level during significant transitions in the Earth's history. The study highlights the importance of understanding past sea level variation in relation to climate change.

Development and deformation of marine terraces: Constraints to the evolution of the Campania Plain Quaternary coastal basin (Italy)

Ciro Cerrone et al.

Summary: Paleoshorelines were discovered in the eastern margin of the Campania Plain, providing new evidence for the tectonic and sedimentary processes governing the Quaternary development of the area. These paleoshoreline remnants are associated with three marine terraces mainly from the late Middle Pleistocene, influenced by a extensional fault system controlled by horizontal extension. The study gives insights into the regional tectonics controlling the formation of the Campania Plain basin.

Last interglacial sea-level history from speleothems: a global standardized database

Summary: Speleothems are important archives for reconstructing past sea levels, with two main categories recognized as sea-level indicators: POSs and SVSs. POSs deposit at higher sea levels in coastal caves, while SVSs record lower sea levels, helping to understand past sea-level changes.
