Heart rate variability as possible marker of brain damage in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy: a systematic review

Iliana Bersani et al.

Summary: Heart rate variability (HRV) is considered the most valuable non-invasive test for investigating autonomic nervous system function. Abnormal HRV values have been associated with brain impairment in the perinatal period, making HRV a potential marker for brain damage in cases of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. HRV may offer early information on the severity of brain injury in asphyxiated neonates and assist in designing personalized treatments, but further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Multiparametric EEG analysis of brain network dynamics during neonatal seizures

Lorenzo Frassineti et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the time trend of neonatal seizures by analyzing the synchronizability and Circular Omega Complexity of the brain network, successfully distinguishing seizure events from non-seizure events. The combination of S and COC at standardized time points provided a reliable description of the physiological behavior of the brain network during neonatal seizures.

The ILAE classification of seizures and the epilepsies: Modification for seizures in the neonate. Position paper by the ILAE Task Force on Neonatal Seizures

Ronit M. Pressler et al.

Summary: Seizures in the neonatal period are often provoked with an acute cause and may only be evident on EEG. The classification of seizure types in neonates emphasizes the role of EEG in diagnosis and allows for a choice in the level of detail when classifying seizures in this age group.

Seizures in the neonate: A review of etiologies and outcomes

Summary: Neonatal seizures mainly occur in close relation to acute brain injury or systemic insult, categorized as acute symptomatic or unprovoked seizures. Unprovoked neonatal seizures can be caused by structural brain abnormalities or genetic conditions, emphasizing the importance of early differential diagnosis.
