Association Between Total Bilirubin Levels and Cardio-Metabolic Risk Factors Related to Obesity

Mervat M. El-Eshmawy et al.

Summary: This study found an association between total bilirubin levels and metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors related to obesity. Obese adults had lower levels of total bilirubin, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and AST/ALT ratio, while having higher levels of fasting insulin, insulin resistance, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), uric acid, and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT). Total bilirubin was negatively associated with body mass index, waist circumference, fasting insulin, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), uric acid, and positively associated with HDL-C. HDL-C and NLR were independent predictor variables of total bilirubin.

Bilirubin as a metabolic hormone: the physiological relevance of low levels

Justin F. Creeden et al.

Summary: Recent research indicates that bilirubin may have a new role as a metabolic hormone, potentially leading to cardiovascular complications for patients with low levels. Protective mechanisms at mildly elevated levels of bilirubin could offer treatment possibilities for those with hypobilirubinemia.

Gender and gut microbiota composition determine hepatic bile acid, metabolic and inflammatory response to a single fast-food meal in healthy adults

A. Figge et al.

Summary: This study characterized the effects of a single fast-food binge on hepatic steatosis, inflammation, bile acid, glucose, and lipid metabolism. The results showed that fast food induced changes in liver parameters, including a significant increase in fasting serum bile acid levels. Additionally, specific gut microbiota and gender were found to be associated with the bile acid increase and observed alterations in liver function, metabolism, and inflammation.

Bilirubin: The yellow hormone?

Libor Vitek et al.

Summary: Bilirubin plays an important role in regulating various biological functions in the human body, including cell signaling, metabolism modulation, and immune regulation. Individuals with chronic mild unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia typically have a lower incidence of civilization diseases, while higher serum concentrations of unconjugated bilirubin may serve as a protective factor against these diseases.

Association of Serum Bilirubin Level with Metabolic Syndrome and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study of 1672 Obese Children

Summary: Obesity plays a central role in the development of metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in children, with serum bilirubin concentrations showing an inverse association with certain components of metabolic syndrome. However, bilirubin does not appear to be protective against metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in severe obesity.
