Urinary biomarkers in bladder cancer: A review of the current landscape and future directions

Kenrick Ng et al.

Summary: This narrative review discusses established and emerging urinary biomarkers for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, highlighting the limitations of classical FDA-approved protein biomarkers. Advancements in epigenetic and genetic markers as well as extracellular vesicles have shown promise in enhancing sensitivity and specificity in bladder cancer diagnosis. The future focus will be on utilizing these markers in combination to create predictive signatures for everyday clinical practice.

Expression profiles, biological functions and clinical significance of circRNAs in bladder cancer

Xiaoqi Yang et al.

Summary: circRNAs play crucial regulatory roles in BCa by modulating various biological behaviors through miRNA sponging mechanisms. The expression levels of circRNAs are significantly associated with clinicopathologic characteristics and can be used to predict patient survival parameters. Due to their abundance, conservation, stability, specificity, and detectability, circRNAs are considered potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for BCa.

LncRNA MAFG-AS1 regulates miR-125b-5p/SphK1 axis to promote the proliferation, migration, and invasion of bladder cancer cells

Chenye Tang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that MAFG-AS1 plays an oncogenic role in bladder cancer by regulating the miR-125b-5p/SphK1 axis. MAFG-AS1 may serve as a good diagnostic marker and a potential therapeutic target for bladder cancer.

Role of microRNA-381 in bladder cancer growth and metastasis with the involvement of BMI1 and the Rho/ROCK axis

Dayin Chen et al.

Summary: This study revealed that miR-381 may serve as a beneficial biomarker in BCa patients. Up-regulation of miR-381 suppresses BCa development through BMI1 down-regulation and the inactivation of the Rho/ROCK signaling pathway both in vivo and in vitro.

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors for the Treatment of Bladder Cancer

Antonio Lopez-Beltran et al.

Summary: Several immune checkpoint inhibitors have been approved for the treatment of patients with metastatic urothelial carcinoma, showing promising efficacy in first-line or second-line therapy. PD-L1 expression may be a predictive factor for response to ICIs. Anti-PD-1 and PD-L1 antibodies have demonstrated durable responses in some mUC patients.

MMP-7 Serum and Tissue Levels Are Associated with Poor Survival in Platinum-Treated Bladder Cancer Patients

Tibor Szarvas et al.

Summary: Chemotherapy resistance is a major issue in bladder cancer treatment. MMP-7 tissue and serum levels are associated with poor prognosis in patients undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy. Analysis of MMP-7 may help in optimizing therapeutic decisions for bladder cancer patients.

Super-delta2: an enhanced differential expression analysis procedure for multi-group comparisons of RNA-seq data

Zihan Cui et al.

Summary: Super-delta2 is a differential gene expression analysis pipeline for RNA-seq data, which achieves tight control of type I error through trimming and bias-correction in the normalization step. In comparisons, super-delta2 not only demonstrates excellent statistical power, but also is the only method that effectively controls type I error at the nominal level. When applied to breast cancer data, super-delta2 selects more biologically relevant pathways than other methods.

A hypoxia related long non-coding RNA signature could accurately predict survival outcomes in patients with bladder cancer

Facai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed a hypoxia-related lncRNA signature to predict survival outcomes in bladder cancer patients, accurately predicting survival outcomes and showing associations with immune cell infiltration, tumor mutation burden, and gene set enrichment.

The role of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter mutations in prognosis in bladder cancer

Song Wan et al.

Summary: TERT promoter mutations are common in bladder cancer and significantly associated with recurrence, but not with overall survival. Bladder cancer patients with TERT promoter mutations have a higher risk of recurrence, making it a potential predictor for bladder cancer recurrence.
