Enhanced aerosol particle growth sustained by high continental chlorine emission in India

Sachin S. Gunthe et al.

Summary: The study suggests that half of the reduced visibility in cities in India is attributed to local emission of gas-phase hydrochloric acid from waste-burning and industry. The high concentration of hydrochloric acid contributes to haze and fog formation, impacting the economy and human health. Identifying and regulating gaseous hydrochloric acid emissions could be critical to improving visibility and human health in India.

Improved Mechanistic Model of the Atmospheric Redox Chemistry of Mercury

Viral Shah et al.

Summary: A new chemical mechanism for the atmospheric cycling of Hg-0/Hg-I/Hg-II is proposed and implemented in a global atmospheric chemistry model for comparison with observations. The model successfully explains the oxidation and deposition processes of Hg in the atmosphere, with major uncertainties including the concentration of Br, stability and reactions of Hg-I, and speciation and photoreduction of Hg-II in aerosols and clouds.

Anthropogenic Impacts on Tropospheric Reactive Chlorine Since the Preindustrial

Shuting Zhai et al.

Summary: The study reveals that anthropogenic emissions have significantly impacted tropospheric reactive gaseous chlorine (Cl-y) since the 1940s, with a substantial increase in nonsea-salt chlorine contribution and a decrease in Cl-y since the 1970s due to reduced anthropogenic emissions.

Iodide CIMS and m/z 62: the detection of HNO3 as NO3- in the presence of PAN, peroxyacetic acid and ozone

Raphael Dorich et al.

Summary: Chemical ionisation mass spectrometry using I- ions has been used to measure NO3 and N2O5, but reports of high daytime concentrations likely suffer bias from HNO3 presence. Laboratory experiments demonstrate efficient detection of HNO3 with I- ions, especially in the presence of O-3, but a potential bias in I-CIMS measurements due to the conversion of CH3CO2 to NO3- is identified. Further ozone and humidity dependence on HNO3 detection is characterized for accurate measurements in stratospheric air masses.
