Conceptual Framework of Connectivity for a National Agroecosystem Model Based on Transport Processes and Management Practices

Jeffrey G. Arnold et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of a national agroecosystem model, proposing to divide the conterminous United States into process domains for simulating and managing processes at relevant scales. The new connectivity framework has the potential to greatly improve national conservation and environmental assessments conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Biophysical and policy factors predict simplified crop rotations in the US Midwest

Yvonne Socolar et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the crop rotational complexity of 1.5 million fields in the US Midwest and found a negative relationship between rotational complexity and biophysical factors such as land capability and precipitation, indicating reduced rotation in prime growing areas. Additionally, a positive relationship between rotational complexity and distance to the nearest biofuel plant suggests policy-driven constraints on regional rotations, exacerbating soil degradation in the US's most fertile soils.

Assessing the Impact of Land Use and Climate Change on Surface Runoff Response Using Gridded Observations and SWAT+

Paul Kiprotich et al.

Summary: The Anthropocene period is characterized by a shift from rural communities to urban centers, leading to a transformation of the global landscape. Despite limited climate data in African catchments, the new generation of SWAT+ model and high-resolution gridded data show promising simulation results, highlighting the importance of land management practices in counteracting the increase in surface runoff.
