Demonstration of ultrahigh thermoelectric efficiency of ∼7.3% in Mg3Sb2/MgAgSb module for low-temperature energy harvesting

Zihang Liu et al.

Summary: Researchers have made significant advancements in thermoelectric materials by adding minor amounts of Cu to the Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 system, leading to improved thermoelectric performance and reduced thermal conductivity. Through grain-boundary engineering, the detrimental effects of thermally activated electrical conductivity were successfully eliminated. The fabricated thermoelectric module, when combined with a p-type alpha-MgAgSb-based material, showed promising potential for low-temperature thermoelectric harvesting.

Residual resistivity as an independent indicator of resonant levels in semiconductors

Bartlomiej Wiendlocha et al.

Summary: The study presents an independent method to differentiate between resonant and non-resonant impurities by analyzing the low-temperature electrical resistivity rho(0) and carrier mobility mu(0) of SnTe doped with In as a function of impurity concentration x. By comparing with non-resonant cases of SnTe doped with I, Mn, and Ga, the construction of residual resistivity rho(0)(x) and residual mobility mu(0)(x) plots allows for distinguishing between resonant and non-resonant impurities, even when some induce similar thermopower enhancements. The methodology is further confirmed by analyses conducted on Na- and Tl-doped PbTe, showing how transport measurements at low temperatures can be used to determine the resonant nature of an impurity.

Synthesis and physical properties of single-crystalline InTe: towards high thermoelectric performance

Shantanu Misra et al.

Summary: Chalcogenide semiconductors and semimetals, including tetragonal InTe, are promising candidates for thermoelectric applications due to their high thermoelectric performance near 800 K. An investigation of InTe single crystals grown over a wide temperature range revealed anisotropic transport coefficients and a semiconductor ground state despite previous suggestions of a semimetallic nature. The extremely low lattice thermal conductivity of InTe, combined with a relatively high power factor, resulted in a maximum dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit of 0.61 at 780 K along the [110] direction, laying a solid foundation for future doping strategies in high-temperature thermoelectric applications.

Novel IV-V-VI semiconductors with ultralow lattice thermal conductivity

Yu Gan et al.

Summary: A group of 56 novel layered semiconducting IV-V-VI compounds with ultralow lattice thermal conductivity have been predicted through high-throughput ab initio calculations. These compounds exhibit intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity at room temperature, attributed to avoided-crossing behavior between optical phonons and acoustic modes, leading to significant reduction of phonon group velocities and inducing strong anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering. This work provides a new family of semiconductors with exceptionally low lattice thermal conductivity and emphasizes the design of new low-kappa(l) materials.
