Discrepancies between brown carbon light-absorption properties retrieved from online and offline measurements

Zezhen Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, the imaginary part of the refractive indices (k) of brown carbon (BrC) was compared between online and solvent-extraction offline light-absorption measurements. It was found that the solubility of BrC in dichloromethane was higher than in methanol, and the k values of BrC extracts varied depending on the solvent and the darkness of BrC. The results suggest that the differences observed between k of BrC aerosol and extracts are due to the inefficiency of solvent extraction and not intrinsic differences between the online and offline methods.

A ubiquitous tire rubber-derived chemical induces acute mortality in coho salmon

Zhenyu Tian et al.

Summary: Research on coho salmon in the U.S. Pacific Northwest revealed unexpected risks of a highly toxic quinone transformation product of the tire rubber antioxidant 6PPD. This implies toxicological relevance for burned-off tire rubber residues to aquatic species.
