Taxonomic punchlines: metadata in biology

Patrick H. McClellan

Summary: Biological nomenclature contains metadata that provide information about a taxon's place in nature and the namer's position in contemporary science and culture. This paper documents the use and value of socio-scientific metadata through examples of whimsical taxonomic names, capturing views expressed by prominent palaeozoologists and biologists. The conclusion is that whimsical names will likely become more common in scientific literature, warranting acknowledgment in the international zoological code to preserve their origin stories.
