Charge-polarized interfacial superlattices in marginally twisted hexagonal boron nitride

C. R. Woods et al.

Summary: This study observes ferroelectric-like domains in hexagonal boron nitride crystals stacked at small twist angles, attributed to interfacial elastic deformations creating out-of-plane dipoles formed by pairs of boron and nitrogen atoms. This discovery opens up new possibilities for designing van der Waals heterostructures and offers an alternative probe for studying moire-superlattice electrostatic potentials.

Interferences of electrostatic moire potentials and bichromatic superlattices of electrons and excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides

Qingjun Tong et al.

Summary: Recent experimental progress has shown the great potential of electronic and excitonic moire superlattices in transition metal dichalcogenides for quantum many-body simulations and quantum optics applications. Engineering tunable multi-chromatic superlattices through the interference of moire potentials from independently configurable heterointerfaces in multilayers greatly enriches the versatility and controllability of TMDs moire as a quantum simulation platform. The findings demonstrate the electrostatic origin of moire potential landscapes in TMDs heterostructures, allowing for strain-switchable structures with diverse properties.

Piezoelectric networks and ferroelectric domains in twistronic superlattices in WS2/MoS2 and WSe2/MoSe2 bilayers

V. V. Enaldiev et al.

Summary: Twistronic van der Waals heterostructures provide exciting opportunities for engineering optoelectronic properties of nanomaterials, with moire superlattice structures playing a key role. Multiscale modeling reveals a rich variety of confinement conditions for charge carriers and excitons in twistronic bilayers, influenced by ferroelectric polarization and piezoelectric effects. Different alignment angles lead to unique trapping and quantum box effects for electrons, holes, and excitons, highlighting the importance of precise alignment for reproducible electronic characteristics in such heterostructures.

Γ valley transition metal dichalcogenide moire bands

Mattia Angeli et al.

Summary: In this paper, a continuum theory of moire minibands in the valence bands of Gamma-valley homobilayers is developed, with benchmarking against large-scale ab initio electronic structure calculations. Due to the emergent D-6 symmetry, low-energy Gamma-valley moire holes are found to differ qualitatively from their K-valley counterparts, with the first three bands realizing different models.

Quantum criticality in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides

Augusto Ghiotto et al.

Summary: Metal-to-insulator transitions in twisted WSe2 exhibit strange metal behavior at low temperatures and Fermi liquid behavior at intermediate temperatures, eventually reaching an anomalous saturated regime near room temperature. This new platform allows for the study of doping and bandwidth-controlled metal-insulator quantum phase transitions on the triangular lattice.

Interaction-Driven Filling-Induced Metal-Insulator Transitions in 2D Moire Lattices

Haining Pan et al.

Summary: This study develops a theory for the transition from interaction-driven correlated insulators to conducting metals in twisted WSe2 materials by tuning the filling factor around commensurate fractional fillings of the moire unit cell in the 2D honeycomb lattice. Metallic states are found slightly away from half-filling, as recently observed experimentally. Stabilities, magnetic properties, and experimental signatures of resulting insulating and metallic phases are discussed, along with the nature of correlated insulator states at rational fractional fillings.

Stacking-engineered ferroelectricity in bilayer boron nitride

Kenji Yasuda et al.

Summary: In this research, ferroelectricity is achieved in two-dimensional boron nitride through van der Waals assembly, demonstrating the phenomenon that polarization can be changed by twisting the angle. This discovery paves the way for potential applications in ultrathin nonvolatile memory, while maintaining the high mobility of graphene.

Summary: In this study, a stable ferroelectric order was discovered at the interface between two naturally grown flakes of hexagonal boron nitride, where the flakes were stacked in a non-centrosymmetric parallel orientation. Reversible polarization switching coupled with lateral sliding was achieved by scanning a biased tip above the surface.

Summary: The study investigates the electronic properties of half-filled narrow moire bands in two-dimensional semiconductor heterobilayers, where correlation strengths can be varied by changing twist angles or interaction strengths. A phase diagram is constructed for the bilayer, identifying the metal-insulator phase transition and estimating the sizes of the charge gaps in the insulating phase.

Electron transport in dual-gated three-layer MoS2

Michele Masseroni et al.

Summary: The low-energy band structure of few-layer MoS2 is studied in a dual-gated three-layer MoS2 system, where carrier density can be tuned to mimic a monolayer MoS2 by applying voltage between the MoS2 layers and gate electrodes. Analysis of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations helps attribute carrier densities in different layers and reveals a twofold Landau level degeneracy for each band. Interlayer tunnel coupling affects electron scattering between outer layers, while the middle layer remains decoupled due to spin-valley symmetry.
