Exceptional topology of non-Hermitian systems

Emil J. Bergholtz et al.

Summary: This review discusses the current understanding of the role of topology in non-Hermitian systems and its physical consequences in dissipative settings, focusing on the concept of exceptional degeneracies and its distinct phenomena, as well as the new notions of gapped phases in single-band systems. The unique sensitivity of non-Hermitian matrices to boundary conditions is highlighted, leading to anomalous relationships between bulk and boundary physics. Additionally, applications of non-Hermitian topology in classical and quantum systems are reviewed, showing its relevance beyond the field of topological phases.

Nonunitary Scaling Theory of Non-Hermitian Localization

Kohei Kawabata et al.

Summary: The authors developed a scaling theory of localization in non-Hermitian systems, revealing that non-Hermiticity introduces a new scale and breaks down the conventional one-parameter scaling theory of localization. The unconventional non-Hermitian delocalization is identified as originating from the two-parameter scaling. Furthermore, based on reciprocity, the authors established the threefold universality of non-Hermitian localization, where reciprocity prohibits delocalization without internal degrees of freedom, and symplectic reciprocity results in a new type of symmetry-protected delocalization.

Network model for higher-order topological phases

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: We introduce a two-dimensional network model that realizes a higher-order topological phase (HOTP). In the HOTP, the bulk and boundaries of the system are gapped, and 16 corner states are protected by specific symmetries. Additionally, the model exhibits a strong topological phase at a point of maximal coupling, in contrast to conventional models. By introducing topological invariants, point group symmetry can protect a topological phase in a network. Our work lays the foundation for realizing HOTP in alternative experimental platforms using the network model.

Universal Hall conductance scaling in non-Hermitian Chern insulators

Solofo Groenendijk et al.

Summary: In this study, we examined the Hall conductance of a two-dimensional Chern insulator coupled to an environment causing gain and loss. We found that strong gain and loss can result in a nonanalytical contribution to the Hall conductance, which exhibits a universal power law behavior near its onset, with a power of 3/2 as a function of Dirac mass, chemical potential, and gain strength. This work paves the way for further research on non-Hermitian topology in fermionic transport experiments.
