Gravitational waves from the fragmentation of axion-like particle dark matter

Aleksandr Chatrchyan et al.

Summary: The misalignment mechanism efficiently produces light scalar bosons, making them an appealing dark matter candidate. However, in certain cases, self-interactions of these bosons can lead to fragmentation and production of gravitational waves. The stochastic GW background produced from this process can be enhanced by an extended ultrarelativistic phase, but is limited by the requirement that the dark matter remains sufficiently cold. In some cases, the resulting GWs may be detectable by future GW detectors, providing a complementary probe of this type of dark matter.

Whispers from the dark side: Confronting light new physics with NANOGrav data

Wolfram Ratzinger et al.

Summary: The NANOGrav collaboration has recently observed first evidence of a gravitational wave background in pulsar timing data, which could be due to new physics. They found that the signal can be well fit with peaked spectra expected from phase transitions or from the dynamics of axion-like particles in the early universe.

Nano-Hz Gravitational-Wave Signature from Axion Dark Matter

Naoya Kitajima et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the spectrum of the stochastic gravitational-wave background from U(1) gauge fields produced by axion dark matter can be accurately calculated using numerical lattice simulations to track nonlinear dynamics, predicting a circularly polarized gravitational-wave signature and having the potential to explain NANOGrav 12.5 yr data.

Gravitational tests of electroweak relaxation

Daniele Barducci et al.

Summary: In a scenario where the electroweak scale is stabilized via the relaxion mechanism during inflation, the back-reaction potential generated by the confinement of new strongly interacting vector-like fermions can cause a second relaxation phase if the reheating temperature is high enough to deconfine the new strong interactions. The study focuses on identifying parameter spaces where the second relaxation phase does not disrupt the successful stabilization of the electroweak scale, and examines how a strong first order phase transition associated with the end of the second relaxation phase can potentially generate a detectable gravitational wave signal in future interferometer experiments.

Gravitational waves from an axion-dark photon system: A lattice study

Wolfram Ratzinger et al.

Summary: This study presents a lattice study of an axion-dark photon system in the early Universe and predicts the GW background spectrum. The study finds that the GW spectrum has more power at high momenta and that the degree of polarization depends on the coupling size. The relic abundance of ALP may be significantly suppressed.
