Biodegradability of poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) and poly(ε-caprolactone) via biological carbon cycles in marine environments

Miwa Suzuki et al.

Summary: Approximately 4.8-12.7 million tons of plastic waste enters marine environments annually via wind and river currents. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation warns that if the current rate of plastic environmental runoff continues, the total weight of plastic waste in the oceans will surpass the total weight of fish by 2050. Therefore, biodegradable plastics like PHAs and PCL are gaining attention due to their excellent marine biodegradability.

Effect of Block Number and Weight Fraction on the Structure and Properties of Poly(butylene terephthalate)-block-Poly(tetramethylene oxide) Multiblock Copolymers

Hui Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of block number and polyester weight fraction on the properties of poly(ether ester) multiblock copolymers, revealing that with an increase in block number, phase-separation-domain size decreases and strength and elongation at break increase. Moreover, an increase in polyester weight fraction significantly enhances the strength and Young's modulus of the materials but decreases their elongation at break.

The Effect of Trifluoroacetic Acid on Molecular Weight Determination of Polyesters: An in Situ NMR Investigation

Yan-Yan Tu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of trifluoroacetic acid on the hydroxyl end-groups of polyesters when used as a co-solvent, revealing esterification reactions that impact molecular weight determination. The results suggest that NMR measurements must be conducted within 1.3 hours of solution preparation at 25 degrees C in the mixture solvent to achieve a relative error of 5%. The findings provide insights for the characterization of polyesters and polyethers with alcohol functionalized groups.

Naked micelles: well-defined polymer nanoparticles from photo-cleavable block copolymer micelles

Giada Quintieri et al.

Summary: Researchers synthesized and self-assembled a photolabile diblock copolymer into spheres, worms and vesicles, with the corona being photcleaved to leave a negative charge around the unaltered core. The polymer features a water-soluble polyethylene oxide (PEO) corona block and a hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) core block, covalently linked by an o-nitrobenzyl moiety (ONB) for electrostatic stabilization after UV light exposure. The negatively charged core interacts with cationic species, such as cationic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), to decorate the PS surface.

Biodegradable all polyester-based multiblock copolymer elastomers with controlled properties

Hongjuan Li et al.

Summary: The study describes the synthesis of a environmentally-friendly biodegradable all polyester-based thermoplastic elastomer with tunable properties through a cascade polycondensation-coupling ring-opening polymerization (PROP) method. The copolyesters have randomly distributed segments in the main chains and exhibit controlled properties as the feeding content of COBTs increases.
