Forest gardens increase the financial viability of farming enterprises in Sri Lanka

Kamal Melvani et al.

Summary: This study explores the financial contributions of forest gardens (FGs) to farming enterprises in Sri Lanka and finds that FGs play a crucial role in enhancing the financial viability of these enterprises. In the short-term, FGs contribute significantly to household consumption and fuelwood self-sufficiency, generating the highest profit among all land uses. In the long-term, FGs possess substantial biological and land assets, accounting for a significant portion of the total equity of farming enterprises. These findings highlight the importance of recognizing the financial contributions of FGs in national economic performance assessments.

The Inconvenient Truth About Convenience and Purposive Samples

Chittaranjan Andrade

Summary: Most research is conducted on convenience and purposive samples, which may be randomly or nonrandomly drawn. Findings can only be generalized to the (sub)population from which the sample is drawn. The importance of good sampling techniques in the design and interpretation of research is understated and must change.
