Cobordism conjecture, anomalies, and the String Lamppost Principle

Summary: We explored triviality of cobordism classes and anomaly cancellation in supergravity theories in d > 6, leading to the existence of defects called I-folds. The compactification conditions to lower dimensions with these defects being anomaly-free impose restrictions on higher dimensional theories, particularly on the allowed rank of gauge groups. These restrictions explain observed limitations in string theory constructions, with the solutions in eight and nine dimensions matching string theory compactifications.Constraints on the global structure of the gauge group in eight and nine dimensions were also derived using these techniques.

Instantons, symmetries and anomalies in five dimensions

Summary: This study reveals a finite-order mixed 't Hooft anomaly in five-dimensional non-abelian gauge theories, as well as an obstruction to coupling the U(1) global symmetry with a classical background gauge field associated with a one-form center symmetry. A similar obstruction is found to occur in gauge theories with fundamental matter. Furthermore, the general dynamical properties of the candidate phases implied by the anomaly are explored.

8d supergravity, reconstruction of internal geometry and the Swampland

Summary: By studying consistency conditions on worldvolume theory of 3-brane probes, we strengthen Swampland constraints on 8d supergravity theories, leading to strict restrictions on compact internal geometry, gauge algebra, and higher derivative terms. These results provide further evidence for the string lamppost principle in 8d with 16 supercharges.
