Mild C-C Bond Formation via Lewis Acid Catalyzed Oxetane Ring Opening with Soft Carbon Nucleophiles

Hai Huang et al.

Summary: The use of soft carbon nucleophiles to open oxetanes has been developed for efficient C-C bond formation. Silyl ketene acetals and styrene-based carbon nucleophiles can generate a wide range of highly oxygenated molecules in the presence of catalysts, which are key substructures in natural products.

Cleavage of Carbon-Carbon σ-Bonds of Four-Membered Rings

Masahiro Murakami et al.

Summary: This article reviews synthetic transformations involving the cleavage of a carbon-carbon bond of a four-membered ring from 2011 to 2019, with a particular focus on progress in catalytic reactions such as oxidative addition and beta-carbon elimination, as well as the increasing attention on beta-scission of radical intermediates. Additionally, Lewis acid-mediated and thermally induced ring-opening of cyclobutanone derivatives have garnered renewed interest, demonstrating the unique synthetic potentials of structurally strained four-membered ring compounds for constructing organic skeletons.

Design, Synthesis, and SAR of Novel 1,3-Disubstituted Imidazolidine or Hexahydropyrimidine Derivatives as Herbicide Safeners

Tao Kang et al.

Summary: Herbicide safeners were designed to enhance crop tolerance to sulfonylurea herbicides, with most of the novel compounds effectively protecting maize against nicosulfuron damage. The bioactivity and structure-activity relationship of the safeners were evaluated, with compound 1-3 showing superior activity and competitive inhibition of nicosulfuron at the acetolactate synthase active site. This compound presents strong herbicide safener activity in maize and may be a potential candidate for novel herbicide safener development.

Merging Imidazolidines with a Trifluoromethylated Tetrasubstituted Carbon through Tungsten Catalyzed 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition

Zhifang Chen et al.

Summary: This unprecedented 1,3-dipole cycloaddition between acyclic CF3-ketimines and N-benzyl azomethine ylide has been enabled by tungsten catalysis, leading to a range of novel imidazolidines with a trifluoromethylated tetrasubstituted carbon center. The gram-scale synthesis capability and variant derivatizations of cycloaddition adducts demonstrate the synthetic potential of this approach, providing easy access to a rapidly expanding library of motifs with a trifluoromethylated fully substituted carbon.

Divergent Synthesis of Aziridine and Imidazolidine Frameworks under Blue LED Irradiation

Xiao Cheng et al.

Summary: The study developed a visible light-promoted divergent cycloaddition of alpha-diazo esters with hexahydro-1,3,5-triazines, leading to a series of aziridine and imidazolidine frameworks with good yields by changing the reaction media. The reaction occurred solely under visible light irradiation without exogenous photoredox catalysts, and a reasonable reaction mechanism was proposed based on control experiments and density functional theory calculations.

Chiral Lewis acid-bonded picolinaldehyde enables enantiodivergent carbonyl catalysis in the Mannich/condensation reaction of glycine ester

Xia Zhong et al.

Summary: A new strategy of asymmetric carbonyl catalysis has been developed using a chiral Lewis acid-bonded aldehyde for the direct Mannich/condensation cascade reaction of glycine ester with aromatic aldimines. The co-catalytic system of 2-picolinaldehyde and chiral Yb-III-N,N '-dioxides was found to be efficient, providing trisubstituted imidazolidines in moderate to good yields with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities under mild conditions. Enantiodivergent synthesis was achieved by changing the sub-structures of the chiral ligands.
