Photophysics of First-Generation Photomolecular Motors: Resolving Roles of Temperature, Friction, and Medium Polarity

Palas Roy et al.

Summary: By investigating the excited-state dynamics, it was found that the properties of the medium can be used to control the excited-state dynamics of light-driven unidirectional molecular rotary motors. However, the most efficient excited-state decay pathway does not lead to a strongly enhanced quantum yield for photochemical isomerization, highlighting the solvent dependence of the complex multidimensional excited-state reaction coordinate.

Steric Effects on the Thermal Processes of Hemithioindigo Based Molecular Motor Rotation

Ludwig A. Huber et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of steric hindrance on thermal helix inversions in molecular motors, using a series of synthesized derivatives. By elucidating the kinetics of thermal helix inversions through H-1 NMR spectroscopy and irradiation techniques, a comparative analysis of substituent effects on the rotation cycle was made possible, leading to a deeper understanding essential for future applications of visible light triggered nanomachines.

Computational Comparison of Chemical and Isotopic Approaches to Control the Photoisomerization Dynamics of Light-Driven Molecular Motors

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that isotopically chiral designs can achieve faster photoisomerization compared to chemically chiral designs, while maintaining similarly high quantum yields. However, isotopic chirality does not provide control over the directionality of photoinduced rotations in some designs. Further studies are needed to establish the optimal structural circumstances for exploiting this asymmetry.

On the Transition from a Biomimetic Molecular Switch to a Rotary Molecular Motor

Marco Paolino et al.

Summary: An experimental/computational study of a candidate obtained via the asymmetrization of a light-driven biomimetic molecular switch was conducted. The achieved motor has an ECD band that is remarkably sensitive to isomerization motion, suitable for timeresolved ECD studies. However, the synthesized motor isomerizes on a longer time scale than expected.

Molecular Pumps and Motors

Yuanning Feng et al.

Summary: Pumps and motors are crucial components in our world, and the advent of artificial molecular machines has provided scientists with unprecedented control over molecular motion through kinetically controlled, away-from-thermodynamic equilibrium chemistry. By designing molecules with kinetic asymmetry, potential landscapes can be engineered to harness external energy for the formation and maintenance of geometric structures of molecular components away from equilibrium.

Effect of charge-transfer enhancement on the efficiency and rotary mechanism of an oxindole-based molecular motor

Daisy R. S. Pooler et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel oxindole-based molecular motor with significant electronic push-pull character and a four-fold increase in photoisomerization quantum yield compared to previous motors in its class. Through a multidisciplinary approach involving synthesis, spectroscopies, and electronic structure modeling, the researchers elucidated the excited state dynamics and rotary mechanism of the motor, concluding that its rotational properties lie between fluorene-based molecular motors and biomimetic photoswitches.
