Land Application of Biosolids in Europe: Possibilities, Con-Straints and Future Perspectives

Andrea Gianico et al.

Summary: The agricultural use of good quality sludge in Europe represents a value-added route to ensure growth sustainability, but specific regulations are required to minimize health issues and environmental risks. The legislative framework on sludge agricultural use lacks harmonization among EU Member States, and challenges such as the fate of emerging micropollutants and microplastics in sludge-amended soils, as well as public health concerns during the COVID-19 epidemic, need to be considered.

The residual effect of sewage sludge biochar on soil availability and bioaccumulation of heavy metals: Evidence from a three-year field experiment

Jhon Kenedy Moura Chagas et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the residual effects of biochar produced at different pyrolysis temperatures on heavy metals in soil and plants, showing that biochar effectively immobilizes harmful heavy metals in soil and continues to supply micronutrients to plants after application ceases. This confirms the feasibility and safety of using biochar as an alternative for reducing contamination by heavy metals in agricultural areas.

Effect of sewage sludge derived compost or biochar amendment on the phytoaccumulation of potentially toxic elements and radionuclides by Chinese cabbage

Marko Cerne et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of sewage sludge-derived compost or biochar as soil amendments on the phytoaccumulation of potentially toxic elements and natural radionuclides by Chinese cabbage in two common soil types in Croatia. The results showed that neither compost nor biochar affected soil loading, with higher ETU of Cd, Cu, and Zn in compost-amended soils. The bioavailability of Cu was highest at 12 mgP/L, while Zn showed highest bioaccumulation at 120 mgP/L.
