Savarkar before Hindutva: Sovereignty, Republicanism, and Populism in India, c.1900-1920

Vikram Visana

Summary: This article reassesses Savarkar's earlier work "The Indian War of Independence" and situates it within the political and intellectual context of fin de siecle western India. It argues that Savarkar's history of Indian rebellion promoted a new form of Indian popular sovereignty based on Hindu-Muslim unity. Furthermore, it suggests that Savarkar adapted the ideas of Mazzini and Bluntschli to challenge the fissiparous logic of late colonial liberalism.
