Analyses on CH4 and CO2 hydrate formation to define the optimal pressure for CO2 injection to maximize the replacement efficiency into natural gas hydrate in presence of a silica-based natural porous medium, via depressurization techniques

Alberto Maria Gambelli

Summary: This study demonstrated that conducting CO2 hydrate formation experiments starting at 40 bar pressure is the most effective solution, as it allows for a shorter formation time and reduces the required pressure drop. The more effective kinetic of the process and the negligible risk of methane hydrate re-formation make the 40 bar CO2 injection into the reservoir the best solution to optimize methane recovery, carbon dioxide storage, and seafloor deformations.

Thermodynamic and kinetic characterization of methane hydrate 'nucleation, growth and dissociation processes, according to the labile Cluster theory

Alberto Maria Gambelli et al.

Summary: In this study, methane hydrates were analyzed for their thermodynamic and kinetic properties in the presence of fresh water and a pure quartz porous medium. The Labile Clusters Theory was used to calculate the hydrate formation rate as a first-order chemical kinetic equation, providing insights into the time dependence of the process. Pressure variations were also discussed, revealing consistent similarities with other parameters and allowing for a detailed characterization of the entire process.

Thermodynamic phase equilibrium of single-guest hydrate and formation data of hydrate in presence of chemical additives: a review

Federico Rossi et al.

Summary: This study provides a review of hydrate phase equilibrium data and hydrate equilibrium in the presence of chemical additives, which will be extremely helpful for researchers planning to design new experimental apparatus for studying gas hydrate. The research also includes a collection of thermodynamic equilibrium data of hydrate with additives, and a review of experiments conducted with methane and carbon dioxide in the presence of inhibitors and promoters simultaneously.

How methane release may affect carbon dioxide storage during replacement processes in natural gas hydrate reservoirs

Alberto Maria Gambelli et al.

Summary: In natural gas hydrate reservoirs, methane replacement with carbon dioxide molecules can occur through initial dissociation or direct exchange. Experimental results show that concentration can modify the formation trend, particularly in terms of carbon storage.

Separation efficiency and equilibrium recovery ratio of SF6 in hydrate-based greenhouse gas separation

Gyeol Ko et al.

Summary: The feasibility of hydrate-based sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) separation was examined by measuring the three-phase equilibria of SF6 + N-2 hydrates, constructing a pressure-composition diagram, identifying the hydrate type using powder X-ray diffraction, and measuring the dissociation enthalpy with a high-pressure micro-differential scanning calorimeter. Experimental results demonstrated the selective capture of SF6 in the hydrate phase, with the hydrate-based method requiring lower initial concentration and pressure compared to the liquefaction method.

An experimental description of the double positive effect of CO2 injection in methane hydrate deposits in terms of climate change mitigation

Alberto Maria Gambelli

Summary: This paper investigates the possibility of injecting CO2 into a hydrate reservoir to prevent methane release. Results show that CO2 is capable of forming a strong hydrate shell around the methane core, preventing its dissociation, leading to both CO2 permanent storage and the prevention of methane release into the atmosphere.

Observation of the Main Natural Parameters Influencing the Formation of Gas Hydrates

Alberto Maria Gambelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of seawater chemical composition in marine sediments on the phase behavior of natural gas hydrates, by analyzing the abundance of main elements such as sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, and sulfate. The results were used to determine the effect of water salinity on hydrate formation thermodynamics, and experimental testing revealed that the presence of different porous media affected the hydrate formation process.

Experimental investigation on the possibility of defining the feasibility of CO2/CH4 exchange into a natural gas hydrate marine reservoir via fast analysis of sediment properties

Alberto Maria Gambelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation of methane hydrate and carbon dioxide hydrate in the presence of two different types of sand simulating seabeds. It was found that the specific characteristics of the seabed, particularly the composition of the sand, significantly influenced the replacement process of CO2/CH4. Sand TS-2 was shown to act as a kinetic and thermodynamic inhibitor for methane hydrate formation while promoting CO2 hydrate formation, making it a strong ally for improving replacement efficiency.

Methane and Carbon Dioxide Hydrate Formation and Dissociation in Presence of a Pure Quartz Porous Framework Impregnated with CuSn12 Metallic Powder: An Experimental Report

Alberto Maria Gambelli et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of CuSn12 alloy powder significantly promoted the hydrate formation and dissociation processes, with the pure quartz porous medium acting as an inhibitor for CO2 hydrate. Different concentrations of CuSn12 powder added in different conditions affected the formation and dissociation processes of hydrates.
